Is the Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Tacoma is a strong choice if you want a durable, capable used truck with broad owner appeal. The all-generations owner rating is 4.5/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, rugged design, off-road ability, and strong resale value. Many also appreciate its everyday versatility and work-ready character, which help it fit both commuting and hauling duties.
Expert reviews rate the 2024 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs across recent expert-reviewed years centre on cabin noise, interior practicality, and a cabin that stays functional even in higher trims. Some years also bring manual-adjust seats that can be troublesome and technology that feels less polished than newer rivals.
30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Tacoma models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Tacoma’s durability, long-term value, and strong resale strength. Across the model years in the data, it earns praise for being a dependable truck that holds up well in everyday use and tougher conditions.
- Owners rate the Toyota Tacoma between 4.2 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally shaped more by condition, maintenance history, and how the truck was used than by the Tacoma nameplate itself.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Tacoma?
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0)
- Infotainment: 8-inch touchscreen with Toyota’s Audio Multimedia system, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 11.9 L/100 km combined with the manual transmission, and as low as 11.2 L/100 km combined with the automatic
Which Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma offers these trims:
- Tacoma: The standard 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder i-FORCE engine, 4WD, an eight-speed automatic, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 make this the starting point for buyers who want the redesigned truck’s core capability.
- TRD Sport: Sport-tuned shocks and a more road-focused setup add a sharper feel for buyers who want a more everyday-friendly version.
- TRD Off Road: 17-inch off-road alloys and Bilstein shocks add trail-ready hardware for shoppers who want stronger off-road capability.
- Premium packages: Heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, a 14-inch centre display, and added comfort and tech make these the best-value choice for buyers who want the most equipment.
What Toyota Tacoma do most buyers choose?
The Toyota Tacoma years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2025.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 458 | 36% |
| 2023 | 404 | 31.7% |
| 2025 | 344 | 35.5% |
| 2022 | 328 | 27.7% |
| 2021 | 224 | 24.6% |
| 2026 | 188 | 35.1% |
These higher-volume years tend to attract more shoppers because they offer a wider mix of prices, trims, and availability. That usually makes it easier to compare options and find a truck that fits your budget and equipment needs.

- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 35.5% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 36%.

Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The latest Tacoma uses a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, with fuel consumption as low as 11.2 L/100 km combined with the automatic.
- Tech: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the Premium packages get a massive 14-inch centre display.

- Starting price: The 2024 Toyota Tacoma comes at a base MSRP of $46,950.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

I bought the Limited to get the retracting running boards for easier access. It has everything you can think of and then some. It has a dash cam to record your drive. Not something I will ever use. It has remote start from an app on your phone. After year one its $15 a month. Ridiculous! It rides nice with a solid feel and has plenty of power when you need it. Yes the back seat is a bit small but doable for average height passengers. The dash screen is too big in my opinion, almost obstruct your view to the right side of the truck. The seats are comfortable and the seat position is good. The fit and finish is good!

The Toyota Tacoma Extra Cab not to be confused with Double Cab. Is new though I bought it used but at 17K it's close to new. While I haven't had it long enough for a full review. I have had Toyota PU's before and the last one I had went 225,000 miles and I still sold it for $2200 9/10 years later after I moved from MN to FL. This one has great pickup off of the 2.4 Liter Turbo and though it takes a climb to get into I'm looking into side railing steps via online suppliers. Overall I am happy with the purchase though I did bite in on the extended warranty since my trade in a downpayment brought the montly costs down low enough to make it affordable. I see F-150's and F-250's and Dodge Ram Trucks of similar make and size but for my money Toyota Truck are legendary for their ability to take wear and tear.

Toyota Tacoma test drive
overall
The Tacoma is still truckin' right along. Toyota marks the start of the model's fourth generation with a ground-up redesign.
The fourth-gen Tacoma is also the first Tacoma to share a platform with the larger Toyota Tundra. (The TNGA-F platform also underpins the Sequoia and the just-revived Land Cruiser.) It launches in Canada in two configurations and six packages, each powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Tacoma's first-ever hybrid powertrain is due in the spring of 2024. We traveled to Malibu, California, to drive the all-new Tacoma in all of its gas-only guises.
