What Volkswagen Golf do most buyers choose?
The Volkswagen Golf years with the most listings are 2016, 2018, and 2017.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 149 | 30.2% |
| 2018 | 135 | 28.1% |
| 2017 | 130 | 30.8% |

| 2020 | 98 | 28.6% |

What is the Volkswagen Golf's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | $13,907 CAD | −15.75% |
| 2020 | $17,304 CAD | −15.35% |
| 2016 | $10,940 CAD | −12.95% |
| 2019 | $16,000 CAD | −11.28% |

| 2017 | $12,720 CAD | −9.02% |
| 2021 | $19,896 CAD | −6.63% |
The table shows broad downward movement across the model years, which can work in your favour if you're shopping used. Several years have seen double-digit price drops, while the smallest changes are still negative, so the overall pattern points to softer pricing across the lineup. That creates opportunities for buyers who want a Golf at a lower entry point than before.
The 2021, 2017, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

CarGurus recommends the 2016 Volkswagen Golf
Summary
With 141 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,322 CAD, 26.2% of 2016 Volkswagen Golf listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Volkswagen Golf 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Volkswagen Golf R stands out because it combines serious performance with the everyday usability that has long defined the Golf name. For this generation, Volkswagen moved to the MQB platform, and the Golf R became more than five centimetres longer than the previous one with the same increase in wheelbase. It also gained a more purposeful stance, while staying visually restrained with bespoke bumpers, side sills, a unique grille, R badges, black door mirrors, and four exhaust tailpipes. From this point on, it was offered only as a five-door model.
Under the bonnet, the 2.0-litre TSI turbo engine was uprated to 296 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. In 2016, a six-speed manual transmission became standard, with a seven-speed DSG transmission available as an option. Standard 4Motion all-wheel drive and Volkswagen’s XDS electronic differential lock give it the grip and cornering control expected of a hot hatch, while the Driving Mode Selection system and optional DCC adaptive damping add flexibility between comfort and sportiness. Equipment levels are also notably high, with features such as heated and electrically adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, bi-xenon headlights, and a rear-view camera.
That breadth of ability is a major part of the Golf R’s appeal: it is quick, well equipped, and still relatively subtle. At the same time, it is not a bargain buy, and the second-generation model has a fairly solid reliability reputation rather than a spotless one, with coolant leaks and water pump failures not unknown. Even so, for buyers who want a compact performance car that feels polished and usable every day, the 2016 Volkswagen Golf R has a strong case.
