Is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class a good car?

Yes — the Mercedes-Benz G-Class earns strong owner approval across the board, anchored by an all-generations user rating of 4.71/5. The recurring praise centres on its luxurious design, rugged build quality, powerful performance, and unmistakable style, with owners also appreciating its off-road capability and overall sense of occasion. Owners consistently describe the Mercedes-Benz G-Class as a luxurious, impressive SUV with rugged build quality, strong performance, and standout design. Across the model years in the data, the owner ratings stay high, which points to a vehicle that leaves a strong impression over time.

• Owners rate the Mercedes-Benz G-Class between 4.0 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied more to the G-Class's complexity, premium positioning, and running costs than to its core appeal.

What should I look for when buying a used Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Mercedes-Benz Pre-Safe, plus forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, park assist, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, and traffic sign recognition.
• Infotainment: Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus dual 12.3-inch displays.

Which Mercedes-Benz G-Class trim should I buy?

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers these trims:

• G 550: The entry gasoline model brings a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, a mild-hybrid system, nine-speed automatic transmission, permanent 4WD, and locking front, centre, and rear differentials; it suits you if you want the core G-Class experience with the broadest appeal.
• AMG G 63: This performance-focused trim adds a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, stronger output, AMG Active Ride Control suspension, and a more aggressive character for buyers who want the most powerful and most distinctive gasoline G-Class.

What Mercedes-Benz G-Class do most buyers choose?

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class years with the most listings are 2021, 2022, and 2020.

These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you more inventory to compare and a better chance of finding the right colour, mileage, and condition. They also sit in the sweet spot where the G-Class's modern redesign and luxury features are well represented without pushing into the newest-price premium.

What is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class's resale value?

Most model years in the table are moving lower year over year, which is good news if you're shopping used and want to avoid paying peak pricing. A couple of newer years are still rising, showing that the newest G-Class models can command strong demand. Overall, the pattern favours buyers looking for value in recent used examples rather than the latest-new inventory. The 2018, 2025, and 2021 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class safe?

• 2025: 7/10
• 2020: 7/10

For 2025, the G-Class adds route-based speed adaptation for adaptive cruise control, automated lane centring, and an emergency-stop feature. For the safest used buy, the 2020 and 2025 models both post the highest confirmed score of 7/10.

Should I buy a used Mercedes-Benz G-Class now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2023 model is at −10.85% versus a year ago, and the 2022 model is at −3.48%.
• Deal availability: The 2022 model has 33.9% good and great deals.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2021 model has the most listings at a current average price of $182,491 CAD. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers a distinctive boxy design, strong presence, and a blend of luxury with genuine off-road capability.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The 2025 lineup pairs a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque in the G 550, while the AMG G 63 uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, and both add a mild-hybrid system with 20 hp and 148 lb-ft.
• Tech: The latest model brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual 12.3-inch displays, augmented reality navigation, and a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 11.6-inch touchscreens.
• Safety: The latest model adds route-based speed adaptation, automated lane centring, and an emergency-stop feature.
• Starting price: For reference, the 2024 G 550 and G 63 are priced in Canada at $183,500 CAD and $247,000 CAD respectively, before fees.

If you're buying used today, the 2021 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
