The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is a big and capable truck that can be found at work sites across the country. When companies look to build out their heavy-duty fleets, the Silverado 2500HD is one of the go-to options (along with its corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra 2500HD). Contemporary models are loaded with creature comforts you’d sooner expect from a luxury sedan, such as leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, and large infotainment screens. But go back to the early 2000s, and basic creature comforts such as upgraded stereos and power doors and locks were among the highlights. Chevy Silverados are meant for work, and they are strong and dependable for what their owners ask of them.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Fourth Generation (2020-Present)

The 2010s were a veritable arms race for pickup trucks, with automakers constantly one-upping each other with “best-in-class” claims. With such brinksmanship, a truck like the new Silverado 2500HD was inevitable. Prices soared along with it, and seemingly every attribute that you could associate with a truck was ramped up to its max.

The standard engine is a gas 6.6-liter V8 which makes 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. The optional 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 puts out 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. Both engines send power through a 10-speed automatic transmission, and shoppers can select rear-wheel drive (RWD) or available 4-wheel drive (4WD) with low-range.

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 comes standard with a hitch, seven-pin connector, trailering mirrors, federally mandated rearview camera, and hitch-guidance technology. Max trailering with the gas engine is 14,500 pounds with a conventional setup and 17,370 pounds with a fifth wheel/gooseneck connection. The diesel can pull 18,500 pounds regardless of trailering setup.

Trims for the Silverado HD are Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country. Base trim status notwithstanding, the Work Truck comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, a V8 engine, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 3.5-inch digital instrument display. The Custom trim adds LED taillights, 20-inch aluminum wheels, side-mirror cornering lights, and a body-color split grille bar. A 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot is available for both Work Truck and Custom trims, and it’s standard for the top three.

If you upgrade to the LT trim, features include a chrome grille, a larger infotainment screen, and a power lift-and-lower tailgate. Cloth seating replaces vinyl on the LT trim.

Back in 2020, we tested the LTZ trim with the Z71 Off-Road package. It featured leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, and remote start.

The High Country is the range-topping trim. Many features that are optional on the LTZ come standard on the High Country. This includes power open/close tailgate, spray-on bed liner, and front and rear park assist.

The Silverado 2500HD comes with traction control, stability control, tire-pressure monitoring system, GM’s Teen Driver software, six airbags, and a backup camera. There are also a number of available driver-assistance features, including lane-departure warning, front and rear park assist, forward-collision warning, and high-beam assist.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Third Generation (2015-2019)

Despite the third generation’s all-new chassis and appearance, it did carry over the second-gen powertrain options. These included the standard 6.0-liter gas V8 power plant. Mated with the six-speed heavy-duty automatic transmission, this hefty V8 puts out 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. As is traditional for heavy-duty pickup engines, mileage figures are unavailable, but towing remains maxed out at 13,000 pounds with the proper equipment. Again, a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) version of this engine was available, though with a significant loss of power.

The Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 remains available to all Silverado 2500HD trims and once more comes under the management of a six-speed Allison 1000 automatic transmission. Look for 397 hp and a whopping 765 lb-ft of torque out of this blown diesel V8, along with some 17,900 pounds of fifth-wheel hauling capability. Again, a standard exhaust brake comes with the turbodiesel, while both drivetrains flaunt a standard trailer sway controller. In 2016, Duramax diesel-equipped models received an upgraded hood design with upgraded air intakes, and gas-fueled models featured a capless fuel-filler.

Features in the base WT are highlighted by an AM/FM stereo setup with four speakers. Moving up to the LT or LTZ trims add a six-speaker stereo with a CD player and and satellite radio. Used Silverado 2500HD shoppers who opt for the LTZ will get the then-new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which should prove easy to use.

Other available features include remote engine start, a rear-view camera, heated front seats, a remote garage door opener, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror as standard. There are some luxury-grade features on upper trims, including heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats. The 2500HD is also available with the Z71 Off-Road Appearance package, which adds beefed-up axle ratios, larger wheels, tubular sidesteps, a spray-in bed liner, and an integrated trailer brake controller.

Standard safety features include stability control, antilock brakes, and front- and side-mounted airbags. It’s also available with lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and a safety alert driver’s seat.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Second Generation (2007-2014)

The 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is available with a choice of regular, extended, or crew cabs. Shoppers can also select standard and long cargo beds, as well as two-wheel- or four-wheel-drive models.

Engine options for this generation of the Silverado 2500HD are a 6-liter gas V8 and a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 engine. You can find used Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD examples with dual-zone automatic climate control, six-way power-adjustable front seats, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and heated front seats. You can also find trucks with an AM/FM/CD stereo with an audio input jack, as well as integrated trailer brake controller. Thanks to the 2500HD’s rugged heavy-duty pickup’s superior build quality, it offers a quiet and controlled ride around town and at highway speeds. Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD First Generation (2000-2006)

The first-generation Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD arrived in 2000, a year after the Silverado 1500 was introduced. Interestingly, the 1500 was offered in an HD trim at this time, and it was a light-duty truck that was beefed up for additional towing and hauling. All HD models had the same engine offerings, including a 6.0-liter V8, an 8.1-liter gas V8, and a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8. The gas V8 made 300 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. The diesel engine made 300 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque. If you selected this engine with the automatic transmission in 2005 and 2006, it put out 310 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque. The 8.1-liter gas V8 was introduced for the 2001 model year, making 340 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. In 2004, an updated version of this engine actually put out slightly less, with 330 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

When properly set up for fifth-wheel towing, the Silverado 2500 can move up to 16,000 lbs. Even with the trailer hitch alone, the Silverado 2500HD can tow up to 12,000 pounds. The Extended Cab has smaller doors than the full four doors on the Crew Cab. Both seat five to six passengers, depending on the trim. The Regular Cab version seats three.

Power—and the power of choice—highlight this generation of the Silverado 2500HD. It offers a wide selection of stout engines, as well as multiple beds, cabs, trims, and options packages. Where the 2500HD falls short is on build quality, but remembering that these trucks are built for work will help keep expectations in check.
