Why it stands out

The 2026 Toyota Corolla stands out because it combines broad everyday appeal with a level of practicality and efficiency that has long defined the nameplate. Toyota’s latest Corolla is described as a sharp-looking car with balanced proportions and sculpted sides, and it offers a wider model range than its predecessor. That mix of sensible packaging and a more distinctive appearance helps explain why it remains such a strong choice for buyers who want a compact car that is easy to live with rather than flashy.

It also brings a useful spread of equipment and powertrain choices. The Corolla sedan and hatchback are both available, while the Corolla Hybrid is offered only as a sedan and the GR Corolla only as a hatchback. Front-wheel drive is standard for most versions, though the sedan and hybrid models are also available with all-wheel drive. Non-hybrid and GR models use a 2.0-litre engine, while the hybrid pairs a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a CVT. Fuel economy is a highlight, with the highest figure listed at 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres combined and the hybrid rated as low as 4.5 L/100 km combined.

For buyers, the Corolla’s appeal goes beyond its specification sheet. The latest generation adds high-tech safety features, and the entry-level sedan includes LED headlights and taillights, a reversing camera, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, a seven-inch touchscreen and voice recognition as standard. A 2023 facelift brought fresh bumper designs, an eight-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, remote keyless entry, and a blind spot monitoring system on all but the base model. The Corolla also has a strong reputation for durability, with Toyota and the Corolla scoring well in recent dependability studies. Its main drawbacks are familiar ones: it is not especially exciting, and some versions remain fairly plain.
