Why it stands out

The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander stands out in the compact SUV class because it offers a third row of seats as standard, giving it a family-friendly advantage that many rivals do not match. It also has a more substantial exterior presence than the Nissan Rogue it shares a platform with, with upright, blocky front-end styling and restyled body panels that give it a brawnier look. Inside, it feels more modern than the previous generation thanks to a thinner, more horizontal dashboard design, a larger infotainment touchscreen, and an available digital instrument panel.

For 2026, the gas Outlander carries over the 2025 refresh, which brought a reorganised centre console, new suspension tuning aimed at a smoother ride, additional sound insulation, and a larger 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. In Canada, it uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive with Mitsubishi’s S-AWC system. That setup prioritises comfort over speed: the Outlander needs almost 10 seconds to reach 100 km/h, and the engine can sound loud when worked hard. Still, it remains quiet for much of the time, rides comfortably, and offers useful standard safety equipment such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, reverse automatic braking, and rear parking sensors.

Its appeal is strongest for buyers who want a practical, well-equipped SUV with seven-seat flexibility and a generous warranty reputation. The trade-offs are clear, though: performance is modest, and the Outlander is described as less polished or refined than some contemporaries. Even so, its combination of standard all-wheel drive, available family-hauling space, and a more distinctive cabin than many compact SUVs helps it carve out a niche of its own.
