Is the 2025 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2025 Subaru Forester earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

It is a sensible, well-rounded compact crossover that focuses on usefulness rather than flash, with standard all-wheel drive, a quieter cabin, and more advanced tech and safety offerings than before. The trade-offs are generic styling and dated infotainment graphics, and there is no hybrid option available.

With 37.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.

Is the 2025 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2025 Forester is built around a familiar formula, which can be a plus if you want a proven compact crossover rather than a dramatic redesign. Subaru also says the cabin is quieter for 2025, and the model’s standard all-wheel drive and improved safety tech support its reputation as a practical, confidence-inspiring choice.

The powertrain is straightforward: every model uses a 2.5-litre Boxer four-cylinder engine with a CVT and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Subaru’s X-Mode and Hill Descent Control are standard too, which adds reassurance in slippery conditions or on rougher surfaces.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the Forester’s appeal is more about consistency than excitement, so you should prioritise condition, maintenance history, and feature content over styling.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Subaru Forester?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Forester comes with cloth upholstery, blue contrast stitching, and two 7-inch touchscreens, while higher trims add more premium materials and equipment. The Sport brings StarTex upholstery and bronze accents, Limited adds leather seating surfaces, and Premier adds even more upscale touches.
• Powertrain: Every 2025 Forester uses a 2.5-litre Boxer four-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, plus Subaru’s CVT and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Subaru’s X-Mode is standard in Canada, and the Sport and higher trims get a dual-function version.
• Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite is standard, with a wider field of view from a third standard camera and an electric brake booster for 2025. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist come on the Touring grade, while Emergency Stop Assist is limited to Limited and Premier trims equipped with the driver distraction-mitigation system.
• Infotainment: The base model uses two 7-inch touchscreens with wired smartphone projection. All but the base trim get Subaru’s 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Touring and up add dual front USB-A and USB-C ports plus a wireless charging pad, while Limited and Premier get navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the Forester at 9.1 L/100 km in the city, 7.2 L/100 km on the highway, and 8.2 L/100 km combined.

Which 2025 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2025 Subaru Forester is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Sport, Touring, Limited, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the value play if you want standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight safety tech, and the core Forester formula without paying for extras. It is also the only trim that keeps the simpler dual 7-inch touchscreen setup, so you should choose it only if you are comfortable giving up the larger infotainment display and wireless smartphone connectivity.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus StarTex upholstery and a more distinctive look. It is the sweet spot if you want a better-equipped Forester without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Touring: This trim adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, dual front USB-A and USB-C ports, and a wireless charging pad. It makes sense if you want more convenience and driver-assistance content.
• Limited: This trim adds leather seating surfaces, navigation, and access to Emergency Stop Assist when equipped with the driver distraction-mitigation system. It suits you if you want a more premium-feeling Forester with extra safety and tech content.
• Premier: This is the most upscale choice, with the highest level of equipment in the range, including the premium audio and navigation content described for the top trims. It is the one to choose if you want the most fully loaded Forester.

The safety package is anchored by EyeSight standard across the range, while Emergency Stop Assist is limited to Limited and Premier trims equipped with the driver distraction-mitigation system.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 497 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.84% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $37,619 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $37,622 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,271 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations if market conditions stay similar. The Forester’s broad appeal, standard all-wheel drive, and practical reputation should help support demand, especially among shoppers who value all-weather confidence and everyday usability. A well-kept example with the right trim and features should remain easier to move than a less distinctive compact crossover.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2025 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2025 Subaru Forester is too new to have been crash-tested by IIHS or NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru’s EyeSight suite comes standard, along with a rear seat reminder system. For 2025, the system gains a wider field of view thanks to a third standard camera, which helps it spot cyclists and pedestrians earlier. An electric brake booster is also added.

A key caveat is that Emergency Stop Assist is only available on vehicles equipped with the driver distraction-mitigation system, which limits it to Limited and Premier trims. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist are also reserved for the Touring grade and above.

Should I buy a 2025 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.84% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a better-equipped base model, more advanced tech and safety offerings, and a quieter cabin.

Consider the 2026 if:

• It adds a rugged Wilderness focus with more off-road capability.

The bottom line: Choose the 2025 if you want the more affordable, broadly appealing Forester with improved refinement and strong standard equipment. If you are price-sensitive and want the best value, the 2025 is the safer buy right now; if you are specifically chasing the newer rugged direction, the 2026 is the one to watch.
