Ford also positions the Explorer as a straightforward, easy-to-live-with family SUV, which supports confidence for long-term ownership. For used buyers, the main risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the trim you choose gives you the equipment and comfort you want for the years ahead.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Ford Explorer?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup is simplified to Active, ST-Line, Platinum, and ST. The base Active gets the core redesign and improved cabin quality, while ST-Line adds a sportier look, Platinum brings the more luxurious feel, and ST is the performance-tuned choice. The biggest feature gap at the lower trims is that BlueCruise starts with ST-Line.
• Powertrain: Most trims use a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, while Platinum can be optioned with a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 and ST gets that V6 standard. All Canadian Explorers use a 10-speed automatic and AWD.
• Safety package: Every version gets Ford CoPilot 360 Assist+, which includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assist and other common driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems. ST-Line and higher add Ford CoPilot 360 2.0 with a surround-view camera system, and BlueCruise is standard from ST-Line upward.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 13.2-inch Ford Digital Experience touchscreen with Google Built-in, Amazon Alexa Built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L, and app support.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.3-litre engine is rated at 11.9 L/100 km city, 8.7 highway, and 10.4 combined. The V6 in Platinum is rated at 13.0 city, 9.3 highway, and 11.3 combined, while the ST returns 13.3 city, 9.6 highway, and 11.6 combined.

Which 2025 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2025 Ford Explorer is offered in 4 trim levels: Active, ST-Line, Platinum, and ST.

Here's the short version:

• Active: This is the value-focused starting point if you want the redesigned Explorer experience without paying for extras you may not need. It gives you the new cabin, the updated tech, and the core safety suite, making it the sensible entry point.
• ST-Line: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the sportier appearance, BlueCruise, and the surround-view camera system while staying below the luxury and performance trims.
• Platinum: Choose this if you want the more upscale feel and the option to add the twin-turbo V6. It suits you best if comfort and a richer cabin matter more than outright sportiness.
• ST: Pick this if you want the strongest performance character, since it gets the twin-turbo V6 standard along with the sport-tuned setup and performance brakes.

The safety-package step-up starts with ST-Line, where BlueCruise and the surround-view camera system join the standard driver-assistance suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Ford Explorer?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 348 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.43% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $51,706 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $51,706 CAD sits slightly below last year's $59,046 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations if the market stays competitive. The Explorer’s improved technology, stronger cabin presentation, and broad appeal should help support demand, especially for well-equipped trims. On the other hand, the lack of a hybrid option and the cramped third row may limit how aggressively some shoppers pursue it compared with the strongest rivals.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2025 Ford Explorer safe?

The 2025 Ford Explorer earns five-star side-impact and four-star rollover resistance ratings from NHTSA, while IIHS says it performs well overall but rates the headlights on Active, ST-Line, and ST as Marginal and the Platinum headlights as Good.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every version includes Ford CoPilot 360 Assist+, which brings adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assist plus common driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems. ST-Line and higher add Ford CoPilot 360 2.0 with a surround-view camera system, and BlueCruise is standard from ST-Line upward with a 90-day subscription included. The main safety caveat is the headlight performance gap on Active, ST-Line, and ST trims.

Should I buy a 2025 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.43% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings major tech and cabin upgrades, plus a simplified trim lineup.

Consider the 2026 if:

• It adds a Tremor model for more off-road capability.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2025 is the smarter buy because it combines softer pricing with meaningful updates. If you specifically want the newest off-road-focused option, the 2026 is the one to watch, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2025 while the market is still favourable.
