Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 a good car?

It’s a mixed but appealing choice if you want a compact luxury SUV with style, comfort, and updated tech, though it asks you to accept some compromises. The user rating is 2/5, and our experts rate it 7.5/10.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

The XC40’s refreshed styling, mild-hybrid powertrains, and Android-based infotainment system help it feel current, while its compact size and upscale positioning make it a natural fit if you’re cross-shopping luxury subcompact crossovers. It also brings a confident all-wheel-drive character that suits Canadian weather well.

Trade-offs include limited cargo space and the fact that the Recharge model is expensive.

With 25.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 reliable?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 looks like a solid entry-level luxury SUV, but its newly added mild-hybrid hardware adds some ownership complexity. Its refined chassis tuning and composed driving manners support the impression of a well-engineered vehicle, and the mild-hybrid system is designed to smooth power delivery while improving efficiency.

The performance notes point to a 48-volt system with an integrated starter generator that assists the engine and supports more start/stop operation. On the cost side, Volvo includes a three-year/100,000-kilometre limited warranty, which is standard coverage but not especially reassuring if you’re worried about long-term complexity.

For used buyers, the main risk is that added electrified components can mean more to monitor as the vehicle ages.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Core trim covers the essentials, but Plus and Ultimate add useful equipment such as fog lights, front and side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and Pilot Assist.
• Powertrain: Canadian B5 models use a 2.0-litre turbo-four with mild-hybrid assistance, rated at 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
• Safety package: Volvo’s standard safety suite includes lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and whiplash-protective front seats. Adaptive cruise control is not standard on the base trim.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch portrait touchscreen, plus Android-based Google built-in features, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan rates B5 AWD models at 9.2 L/100 km combined, with 10.2 L/100 km in the city and 7.9 L/100 km on the highway.

Which 2023 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC40’s standard safety equipment, Android-based infotainment, and mild-hybrid B5 AWD setup. It makes sense if you want the XC40’s style and all-weather capability without paying for extras.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds front and side parking sensors plus a 360-degree camera system, which meaningfully improves day-to-day usability.
• Ultimate: Choose this if you want the most complete XC40 experience, including adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist, along with the most upscale presentation.

The base trim does not include standard adaptive cruise control, so if that matters to you, step up from Core.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to be picky.

• Deal availability: 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 101 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.60% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $33,198 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $33,198 CAD sits slightly below last year's $40,782 CAD.

That drop suggests the XC40 has become more affordable for used buyers, which can help demand in the short term. For a future seller, it also means you may need to price carefully if you want to stay competitive. If the market keeps favouring shoppers, resale values could remain under pressure unless your vehicle is especially well equipped or lightly used.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 earns Good ratings in most IIHS crash tests, though it drops to Acceptable in the updated side-impact test. It also earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and a four-star rollover rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo’s standard safety suite includes lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and whiplash-protective front seats. Base Core models miss out on standard adaptive cruise control, while Plus adds front and side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera, and Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist.

The updated IIHS side-impact result is the main caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.60% compared with last year.
• The 2023 adds mild-hybrid powertrains, revised styling, and Android-based infotainment.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $31,644 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $33,198 CAD average.
• It’s an all-electric XC40 with standard AWD and no significant changes.

The bottom line: If you want the newer gas-powered XC40 with updated tech and a lower market price than last year, the 2023 is the better all-round pick. If your priority is simply spending less and you’re interested in the electric version, the 2022 is the price-sensitive alternative.
