How much does the 2023 Volvo XC40 cost?

There are 94 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 a good car?

It’s a mixed but credible choice if you want a compact luxury SUV with a polished feel, updated tech, and a strong safety focus, though it is not the most practical option in the class. It earns 2/5 from users and 7.5/10 from our experts.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

The XC40’s appeal comes from its stylish design, comfortable cabin, and multiple powertrain options, while the refreshed 2023 model adds mild-hybrid powertrains and the Android-based infotainment system. The trade-offs are clear: cargo space is limited, and the Recharge model is expensive.

For shoppers cross-shopping compact luxury SUVs, the XC40’s 25.5% share of good or great deals gives you some room to find value if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 reliable?

The 2023 XC40 is positioned as a refined, safety-minded luxury crossover, but the newly added mild-hybrid hardware adds some complexity to the ownership picture. Its 48-volt system and integrated starter generator are meant to improve smoothness and fuel economy, and Volvo includes a three-year/100,000-kilometre limited warranty.

That said, the added electrified components mean you should pay close attention to service history and maintenance records on a used example. For long-term ownership, the main risk is buying a poorly maintained vehicle with more complexity than a simpler gas-only crossover.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Core trim covers the essentials, but Plus and Ultimate add useful equipment such as fog lights, front and side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and Pilot Assist.
• Powertrain: Canadian B5 models use a 2.0-litre turbo-four with mild-hybrid assistance, rated at 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and standard AWD.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and whiplash-protecting front seats. Base trims do not get standard adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch portrait touchscreen, plus Google-based built-in apps, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth support.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan rates B5 AWD models at 9.2 L/100 km combined, with 10.2 city and 7.9 highway.

Which 2023 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC40’s standard safety equipment, Google-based infotainment, and mild-hybrid AWD setup. It makes sense if you want the XC40 experience at the lowest price, but you’ll miss some convenience features that come on higher trims.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds front and side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system, along with fog lights. If you want a better-equipped daily driver without stretching to the top trim, this is the one to target.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, adding adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist on top of the Plus content. It suits you if you want the most complete XC40 package and are willing to pay for it.

The base trim does not include standard adaptive cruise control, while Plus and Ultimate add more of the convenience and driver-assistance equipment you may want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, especially if you’re willing to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 94 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.69% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $33,031 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $33,031 CAD sits slightly below last year's $40,623 CAD.

That drop suggests the XC40 has become more attractive to used buyers than it was a year ago. If you’re selling, you may need to price competitively to stand out against the current market. If you’re buying, the softer pricing improves your negotiating position and makes well-kept examples easier to justify.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2023 XC40 earns Good ratings in most IIHS crash tests, but it was rated Acceptable in the updated side-impact test. It also earns five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and a four-star rollover rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo equips the XC40 with lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and whiplash-protecting front seats. The base trim does not include standard adaptive cruise control, while Plus adds front and side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system, and Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist.

The main caveat is that the updated IIHS side-impact result is weaker than the rest of the XC40’s safety record, and the 360-degree camera view is described as distorted.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.69% compared with last year.
• It gives you the refreshed styling, mild-hybrid powertrains, and Android-based infotainment.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $31,541 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $33,031 CAD average.
• It offers an all-electric XC40 experience with standard AWD and a 359-kilometre range.

The bottom line: Choose the 2023 if you want the updated gas-powered XC40 with newer tech and a broader used-market selection. Consider the 2022 if your priority is lower purchase price and you specifically want the electric XC40 Recharge experience.
