How much does the 2023 Volvo XC40 cost?

There are 92 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 a good car?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is a mixed but appealing choice if you want a compact luxury SUV with style, comfort, and updated tech, though its value depends on how much you care about practicality. It earns 2/5 from users and 7.5/10 from our experts.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Volvo’s 2023 refresh brings mild-hybrid powertrains, revised styling, and the Android-based infotainment system, so you get a more modern-feeling XC40 than before. It also fits well if you want an entry-level luxury crossover that still feels distinctive and upscale rather than generic.

The trade-offs are clear: cargo space is limited, and the Recharge model is expensive. The XC40’s market position is still attractive, though, because 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 reliable?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is built around a refined, safety-first formula, but its newly added mild-hybrid hardware adds some ownership complexity. Volvo’s 48-volt system and integrated starter generator are meant to improve smoothness and efficiency, and the brand backs the vehicle with a three-year/100,000-kilometre limited warranty.

That warranty is fairly standard, but it may not fully ease concerns about long-term ownership risk for used buyers, especially if you plan to keep the vehicle well beyond the warranty period.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Core trim covers the essentials, but Plus and Ultimate add useful equipment such as fog lights, front and side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and Pilot Assist. If you want the best value, the mid-level trim is the one to compare carefully against the base model.
• Powertrain: Canadian B5 models use a 2.0-litre turbo-four with mild-hybrid assistance, an eight-speed automatic, and standard all-wheel drive. The mild-hybrid system is meant to improve smoothness and fuel economy.
• Safety package: The XC40 includes lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. Base trims do not get adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch portrait touchscreen, plus Google-based apps, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. The system is built around touchscreen controls rather than physical buttons.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan rates B5 AWD models at 9.2 L/100 km combined, 10.2 city, and 7.9 highway.

Which 2023 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC40’s core safety and tech package, but it misses some convenience and driver-assistance features that many luxury shoppers expect.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim for most buyers because it adds front and side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system without pushing you all the way to the top price tier.
• Ultimate: Choose this if you want the most complete XC40 experience, including adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist, along with the most upscale equipment.

The base trim lacks adaptive cruise control, so if that matters to you, it’s worth stepping up.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 92 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.90% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $32,976 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $32,976 CAD sits slightly below last year's $40,658 CAD.

That price movement suggests the XC40 has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help demand in the short term. For a future seller, though, it also means you may need to price competitively if you want to stand out. If the market stays soft, resale values could remain under pressure compared with last year’s level.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 earns top “Good” ratings in most IIHS crash tests, but it was rated “Acceptable” in the updated side-impact test. It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and a four-star rollover rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo equips the XC40 with lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert as standard. Front seats designed to prevent whiplash are standard as well.

The base Core trim does not include adaptive cruise control, while Plus adds front and side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system, and Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist. The updated side-impact result is the main caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.90% compared with last year.
• The 2023 refresh gives you mild-hybrid powertrains, revised styling, and the Android-based infotainment system.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $31,502 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $32,976 CAD average.
• It is an all-electric XC40 Recharge with standard all-wheel drive and no significant changes for the year.

The bottom line: If you want the updated gas-powered XC40 with newer tech and a softer used-market price, the 2023 is the better all-round pick. If your priority is spending less and you specifically want the electric Recharge version, the 2022 is the more budget-friendly path.
