How much does the 2023 Volvo XC40 cost?

Prices have softened 19.94% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 113 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 a good car?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is a mixed but appealing choice if you want a small luxury SUV with style, comfort, and updated tech, though its practicality and value depend on what you prioritise. It earns 2/5 from users and 7.5/10 from our experts.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Volvo’s 2023 refresh gives the XC40 mild-hybrid powertrains, revised styling, and an Android-based infotainment system, which helps it feel more modern than before. It also fits well if you want an entry-level luxury crossover that feels distinctive rather than generic, and the cabin is described as comfortable.

The trade-offs are clear: cargo space is limited, and the base trim leaves out some equipment you might expect in a safety-focused Volvo. The Ultimate trim adds more convenience and driver-assist tech, but the XC40 still isn’t the most practical pick in this class.

With 27.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 reliable?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is presented as a refined, safety-minded luxury crossover, but its newly added mild-hybrid hardware adds some ownership complexity. Volvo’s three-year/100,000-kilometre limited warranty is standard coverage, and the mild-hybrid setup is designed to improve smoothness and efficiency while supporting the gasoline engine.

The performance side of the XC40 is described as composed and calm, with the chassis absorbing bumps well and the powertrain delivering smooth assistance once underway. The cost-effectiveness notes also point out that the mild-hybrid system is intended to improve fuel economy, and Volvo includes a three-year/100,000-kilometre limited warranty in Canada.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the added electrified hardware may be more complicated than a simpler gasoline setup, so a clean service history matters.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Core trim covers the essentials, but Plus and Ultimate add useful equipment. Fog lights are standard on Plus and Ultimate models, and the base trim does not include some of the convenience and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
• Powertrain: Canadian B5 models use a 2.0-litre turbo-four with mild-hybrid assistance, rated at 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and standard AWD. The mild-hybrid system is meant to smooth power delivery and improve efficiency.
• Safety package: The XC40 includes lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. Plus adds front and side parking sensors plus a 360-degree camera, while Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist. The base trim does not get standard adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch portrait touchscreen, plus Android-based Google built-in features, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. The system is standard, but the touchscreen-heavy layout may not suit everyone.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan rates the B5 AWD at 9.2 L/100 km combined, 10.2 city, and 7.9 highway.

Which 2023 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC40’s core design, standard safety equipment, and the new mild-hybrid powertrain. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but you give up some convenience and driver-assist features.
• Plus: This is the trim that adds the most obvious everyday value, thanks to front and side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system, along with fog lights. It looks like the best-value choice if you want more usability without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, adding adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist on top of the Plus equipment. It suits you best if you want the most complete tech and highway-assist package.

The base trim lacks standard adaptive cruise control, while Plus and Ultimate address that gap in different ways.

• Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 113 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.94% compared with last year.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $33,361 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,671 CAD.

That drop suggests the XC40 has become more approachable for used buyers, which can make it easier to attract interest if you price it competitively. If you own one, you may need to be realistic about resale expectations compared with last year’s market. For future sellers, the strongest listings will likely be the ones with desirable trim equipment and clear maintenance records.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 earns Good ratings in most IIHS crash tests, though it drops to Acceptable in the updated side-impact test. It also earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and a four-star rollover rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo equips the XC40 with lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert as standard. Front seats designed to prevent whiplash are standard too.

The base Core trim does not include standard adaptive cruise control, while Plus adds front and side parking sensors plus a 360-degree camera, and Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist. The updated side-impact result is the main caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.94% compared with last year.
• It brings the refreshed styling, mild-hybrid powertrains, and Android-based infotainment update.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $31,936 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $33,361 CAD average.
• It offers an all-electric XC40 Recharge setup with standard AWD and a quoted 359-kilometre range.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the better pick if you want the refreshed gas-powered XC40 with updated tech and a lower market price than last year. If you’re price-sensitive and specifically want the older electric version, the 2022 is the cheaper path into the XC40 nameplate.
