What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volkswagen Jetta?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline are the main trims to compare, and the base model is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment. The Highline adds a more upscale feel with ambient lighting, genuine leather upholstery, an oversized power sunroof, and larger screens.
• Powertrain: You get a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Trendline and Comfortline can be had with a six-speed manual, while the Highline uses an eight-speed automatic.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Comfortline adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Travel Assist, while Emergency Assist is also part of the safety story.
• Infotainment: Highline trim upgrades to a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. It also adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Car-Net connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: The official Natural Resources Canada fuel consumption rating for the Comfortline and Highline is 7.1 L/100 km in combined driving, and the review’s testing returned 7.8 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 4 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, and GLI.

Here's the short version:

• Trendline: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Jetta lineup. It gets the core sedan formula, but you’ll want to step up if you value more convenience and safety tech.
• Comfortline: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Travel Assist. It’s the trim that most clearly improves the Jetta’s everyday usefulness.
• Highline: This is the one to choose if you want the most upscale Jetta experience. It adds the larger digital display, bigger infotainment screen, wireless smartphone integration, premium audio, and a more luxurious cabin feel.
• GLI: This is the sporty outlier with added power and more rewarding driving dynamics, so it suits you only if you specifically want the performance-focused version.

Comfortline is the trim where the safety package meaningfully expands, while Highline brings the most complete convenience and tech upgrade.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volkswagen Jetta?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 259 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.00% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,951 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $21,951 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,525 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside for a future seller. If you buy at the current average, you’re starting from a lower baseline than last year’s shoppers faced.

For resale, the Jetta’s value story will depend on how well it continues to appeal as a practical, affordable sedan. Strong equipment, a comfortable cabin, and broad everyday usefulness should help keep interest steady.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The 2023 Jetta earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, but it earns four-star ratings for frontal-impact protection. It is rated Poor by IIHS in a new moderate overlap frontal-impact crash test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Comfortline adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Travel Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist into a semi-autonomous driving aid. Emergency Assist can also bring the car to a safe stop if it detects an unresponsive driver.

The main caveat is the IIHS result, which is a notable weak point even though the Jetta’s driver-assistance tech is otherwise impressive.

Should I buy a 2023 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 stands out for its affordable, versatile character and strong everyday comfort.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $21,680 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $21,951 CAD average.
• It brings a refreshed, value-minded package with more standard features and a more polished feel.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, broad availability, and the latest year-specific market data, the 2023 is the better default choice. If your priority is saving a bit more upfront and you’re comfortable with a slightly older model year, the 2022 is the price-sensitive alternative worth a look.
