Is the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 8/10.

The Jetta is presented as an affordable, versatile choice for people who want a practical new set of wheels, and its ride and handling are a major part of that appeal. It also offers a comfortable cabin and impressive safety features, which makes it easy to see why it fits everyday commuting and general family use well.

The trade-offs are clear: the styling is uninspired, performance is described as sluggish, and all-wheel drive is not available.

With 28.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Jetta is positioned as a practical, value-focused sedan, and its comfortable cabin, roomy interior, and straightforward formula support that reputation. Its standard powertrain is simple, and the expert review describes the car as rewarding once you adapt to how it delivers power.

Volkswagen also includes four years of complimentary access to Remote and Safe & Secure feature plans, which adds some ownership convenience. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the car’s mixed safety and drivability notes mean condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volkswagen Jetta?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline are the main trims to compare, with the Highline adding a more upscale cabin feel, ambient lighting, genuine leather upholstery, an oversized power sunroof, and larger digital displays. The base trim is much more basic, so check whether the features you want are included before you buy.
• Powertrain: The Jetta uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is standard on Trendline and Comfortline, while the Highline uses an eight-speed automatic; all-wheel drive is not available.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Comfortline adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Travel Assist, while Emergency Assist can bring the car to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.
• Infotainment: Highline trim gets a 10.25-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro display and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and Car-Net adds connected features, including remote services and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The official Natural Resources Canada fuel consumption rating for the Comfortline and Highline is 7.1 L/100 km in combined driving, and the review recorded 7.8 L/100 km on its test loop.

Which 2023 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 4 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, and GLI.

Here's the short version:

• Trendline: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Jetta, but it is the most basic version and leaves out several of the nicer cabin and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
• Comfortline: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Travel Assist, making it the smartest balance of equipment and price.
• Highline: Choose this if you want the most upscale Jetta experience, with the larger digital cockpit, bigger infotainment screen, wireless smartphone integration, leather upholstery, ambient lighting, and the sunroof.
• GLI: This is the sporty model with added power and more rewarding driving dynamics, but it is a separate performance-focused version rather than the standard Jetta most shoppers will want.

The safety package is strongest once you move beyond the base trim, so if safety tech matters to you, start your search at Comfortline or above.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volkswagen Jetta?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 272 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.13% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,775 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $21,785 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,077 CAD.

That price decline suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, which can make future resale more competitive if you buy at the wrong point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current softness means your best protection is to buy well, keep mileage reasonable, and maintain the car carefully.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The Jetta earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, but it also earns four-star ratings for frontal-impact protection. The IIHS rates it Poor in a new moderate overlap frontal-impact crash test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Comfortline adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Travel Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist into a semi-autonomous driving aid. Emergency Assist is also notable because it can identify an unresponsive driver and bring the car to a safe stop.

The main caveat is that the Jetta’s crash-test performance is not as strong as its feature list suggests, so you should weigh its active safety tech against those results.

Should I buy a 2023 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 stands out for its affordable, versatile character and its strong ride-and-handling balance.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $21,471 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $21,785 CAD average.
• It is a mild but value-minded refresh with upgraded technology and more standard features.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, inventory, and everyday usability, the 2023 is the better default choice. If your priority is saving a bit more up front, the 2022 is the sensible alternative, especially if you find one with the features you want.
