Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Sienna stands out in the minivan world because it comes with a standard hybrid engine. That gives it a clear identity for shoppers who want family-friendly practicality without giving up fuel efficiency, and it helps explain why the Sienna can feel like a smart alternative to a typical three-row crossover. It is also described as spacious, with standard advanced safety features, which adds to its appeal for buyers looking for an easygoing family vehicle.
At the same time, the 2023 Toyota Sienna is not without compromises. Its second-row seats are not removable, the transmission is irritating, and acceleration is sluggish. Owner feedback broadly reinforces the Sienna’s strengths, especially its fuel efficiency, spaciousness, and comfort, while also pointing to concerns about power, engine noise during acceleration, and mixed impressions of the backup camera quality.

Awesome ride, comfort and great mpg. Good looking too. However, backup camera resolution can be improved. Spare tire should come as standard in a minivan.

2023 Sienna XLE 7 passenger AWD My Grandchildrens Favorite! It has lots of room..they can slide the seats back and have living room comfort. They like the rear USB charging ports, rear AC/heat controls, and they can always fit friends back there with them, and their gear. I like it because its comfortable, safe, and gets 35 miles per gallon. The All Wheel Drive is best..most of those available are Front wheel drive. In recent snowstorms, I saw many other vehicles slid off the road, but I never spun a wheel with the AWD. Fantastic resale value, if I ever want to sell it, such as if my needs change. The hybrid is quiet, smooth, and, actually has more horsepower than the older Sienna V6, because the battery assists with extra power when in sport mode. Now, for what I dont like: Irritating Apple car play, when you plug the maps in, you have to wait, and wait, for the directions to appear. Too slow. Apparently, there is no way to upgrade to Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which apparenly solves that problem. Its unclear why Toyota cant/wont allow the software upgrade to make the Apple Car play faster and not frustrating. The back part of the van is difficult to enter, especially for large adults with knee problems. Young adults, under 200 pounds wont have a problem. We carry a step stool so my wife can enter the rear of the van when desired. I do agree, the 3rd seat, when folded down, kind of bounces, unless you set something on it like groceries, suitcases, cargo mat, etc, but that has never caused us any problem. While I have read of unable to start problems because the battery ran down mostly due to defective foot activated door sensors in the 2022 model, I have not had the problem in the 2023 Sienna. For that reason, I recommend avoiding the 2022 Sienna, and go with 2023. I have no desire to go out to my van, and then not be able to start it because the battery is dead, and for that to happen multiple times. I have never had a dead battery in my 2023. It works great every time, except for the issues I mentioned, above. Lastly, my Sienna came with only one key, this is as convient as a broken leg, and they take forever to get me the promised new key...which has never arrived.

Is the 2023 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota Sienna earns a 4.11/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its fuel efficiency, spaciousness, and comfort, and the hybrid setup is a recurring highlight for families who want practicality without giving up efficiency. The overview also points to its family-friendly usefulness and easygoing character, which fits the Sienna’s role as a smart alternative to a typical three-row crossover.
The trade-offs are clear: acceleration is sluggish, the transmission is irritating, and the second-row seats are not removable. Even so, the Sienna’s strong value proposition and standard safety equipment make it appealing if you want a minivan that prioritises efficiency and everyday usability. With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.11/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback repeatedly points to the Sienna as fuel-efficient, spacious, and comfortable, which are all traits that usually matter in long-term ownership. The expert review also describes the technology as reliable, even if the interface itself feels dated and a bit clunky to use.
Toyota’s hybrid powertrain and family-focused design support a dependable ownership case, especially if you value efficiency and practicality over excitement. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is more about living with the Sienna’s compromises than worrying about outright durability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Sienna?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and 25th Anniversary Special Edition trims are all mentioned, and the XLE stands out for adding standard power-sliding doors and a standard power liftgate with kick sensors. The base LE is the entry point, while the Limited sits near the top of the range.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid setup with two front-mounted electric motors, plus a third rear-mounted electric motor on AWD trims. The powertrain makes 245 net system horsepower, but it is not especially quick.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is part of the standard safety equipment, along with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.
- Infotainment: The Sienna uses a 9-inch touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and seven USB ports. The system is wired for CarPlay and Android Auto, and the interface does not feel especially modern.
- Fuel efficiency: NRCan rates the AWD model at 6.8 L/100 km city, 6.6 highway, and 6.7 combined. With FWD, it is rated at 6.6 L/100 km city, 6.5 highway, and 6.6 combined.
Which 2023 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and 25th Anniversary Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point if you want the Sienna’s hybrid efficiency and standard safety features at the lowest starting point.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds standard power-sliding doors and a standard power liftgate with kick sensors.
- XSE: Choose this if you want a sportier look and, on FWD models, 20-inch wheels.
- 25th Anniversary Special Edition: Pick this if you want the commemorative trim positioned just below the Limited.
- Limited: This is the upper-class choice, and it is the trim to target if you want the most premium feel mentioned in the review.
Toyota’s standard safety equipment is a major strength across the range, so even lower trims are well covered.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 129 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.03% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $49,683 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $50,993 CAD sits slightly below last year's $56,055 CAD.
That price decline suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it can also mean future sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. The Sienna’s strong efficiency and family appeal should help support demand, especially among shoppers who prioritise practicality.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.11/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2023 Toyota Sienna earns five-star ratings from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense brings a strong standard suite of driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. That standard coverage is a major advantage for family buyers.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.11/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It pairs a standard hybrid engine with standard advanced safety features and strong family practicality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $47,449 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $50,993 CAD average.
- It carries over the redesigned hybrid formula unchanged.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $55,354 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $50,993 CAD average.
- It adds three rows, power sliding doors, and a comfy, fuel-sipping hybrid setup.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, efficiency, and standard safety, the 2023 is the sweet spot. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the value play; if you want the newer-year alternative and do not mind paying more, the 2024 is the upgrade path.
