Is the 2023 Toyota RAV4 a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Toyota RAV4 earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, good fuel economy, and spacious interior, and many also call out its reliable performance and value for money. That lines up well with the RAV4’s use case as a practical, family-friendly compact crossover built for everyday dependability rather than excitement. For a used shopper, the main long-term risk is less about outright reliability and more about whether the specific example has been maintained well and still feels fresh enough for your needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE starts with fabric upholstery and standard heated front seats, while the XLE adds a heated steering wheel and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Limited brings the most upscale cabin touches, including heated and ventilated power front seats, driver memory, and heated rear seats.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard, and the setup is tuned more for everyday competence than quick acceleration.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard, along with lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam LED headlights, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is included, and it can operate below 30 km/h.
• Infotainment: A standard 8.0-inch touchscreen includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice command, and over-the-air updates. The Limited gets a 10.5-inch screen, while the Trail does not get the upgraded multimedia system.
• Fuel efficiency: The LE AWD is rated at 8.7 L/100 km city, 6.9 L/100 km highway, and 7.9 L/100 km combined. The XLE AWD is rated at 8.8 L/100 km city, 7.1 L/100 km highway, and 8.0 L/100 km combined, while the Trail and Limited AWD are rated at 9.5 L/100 km city, 7.1 L/100 km highway, and 8.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2023 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Trail, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you standard all-wheel drive, heated front seats, and the full safety suite. If you want the lowest-cost path into the RAV4 without giving up the essentials, this is the one to start with.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a heated steering wheel and dual-zone automatic climate control while keeping the RAV4’s core strengths intact. It’s the sweet spot if you want a more comfortable daily driver without jumping to the pricier upper trims.
• Trail: This trim adds the more rugged-looking styling treatment, blacked-out exterior details, and orange interior accents. It suits you if you want the most distinctive appearance in the lineup, but the review notes it is more about style than true off-road ability.
• Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with the larger 10.5-inch touchscreen, JBL audio, larger driver display, ventilated front seats, memory settings, and heated rear seats. Choose it if you want the most premium RAV4 experience and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota RAV4?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options and enough deal activity to reward patience.

• Deal availability: 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 833 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.98% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,414 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $34,417 CAD sits slightly below last year's $35,845 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can make the RAV4 more attractive to used buyers today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim rather than assuming the model will command a premium automatically. The good news is that steady demand and broad appeal should help support values better than many less popular SUVs.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety equipment is broadly standard across the lineup, which is a major strength for used shoppers.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.98% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Toyota updated the infotainment system while keeping the RAV4’s proven formula intact.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $31,804 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $34,417 CAD average.
• It offers a mature, versatile package with efficient powertrains and a roomy interior.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $36,945 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $34,417 CAD average.
• It broadens drivetrain choice and trim variety for buyers who want more configuration options.
