Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and strong performance, and they also highlight the spacious third row and solid interior layout. The 4Runner’s easy-to-use features and family-friendly cabin come through clearly in owner feedback, which fits its role as a rugged SUV that still works for everyday use.

The trade-offs are just as clear: it is not especially polished on the road, and fuel efficiency is a recurring concern. That makes it best suited to you if you want a traditional SUV with real utility rather than a softer, more car-like crossover.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Toyota’s simple, effective hardware and reputation for long-term toughness support that view, and the model’s straightforward design should appeal if you want something built for years of use. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about basic dependability and more about accepting the 4Runner’s age-related compromises.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2023 lineup includes SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro. The base SR5 is the foundation, while the 40th Anniversary Special Edition adds retro styling details, bronze accents, and a numbered plaque, but it is limited in paint and interior choices.
• Powertrain: Every 2023 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with a five-speed automatic and standard 4WD. The Limited gets a full-time 4WD system, while other versions use part-time 4WD. Efficiency is not a strength, so you should expect higher fuel use than in many rivals.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
• Infotainment: The biggest touchscreen is 8 inches, and the system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Connected services are available, and higher trims can add navigation and a JBL premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner is rated at 13.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 13.9 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the starting point, and it gives you the core 4Runner formula with standard safety tech, 4WD, and the simple, rugged cabin layout. It makes sense if you want the least expensive path into the model.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a 4Runner with a more on-road-focused suspension tune while keeping the same basic rugged character.
• Limited: This is the best fit if you want the most road-oriented version, plus the full-time 4WD system and a more comfort-focused setup.
• 40th Anniversary Special Edition: This is the style pick, with retro graphics, bronze details, and limited production appeal. It suits you if you want something distinctive and collectible-looking.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the one to choose if you care most about trail use, since it adds hardware aimed at improving wheel articulation.
• TRD Pro: This is the most serious off-road version, with skid plate protection and a suspension tuned for high-speed dirt use.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard across the range, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get those safety features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 128 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.56% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $54,797 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $54,841 CAD sits slightly below last year's $59,977 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at the current average, you are starting from a lower price base than last year’s shoppers did, which can soften depreciation pressure somewhat.

Even so, the 4Runner’s rugged reputation and steady demand from loyal buyers should help it hold interest better than many mainstream SUVs. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with three-star ratings for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and rollover resistance. It also gets a Marginal rating from IIHS for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level this year.

The main caution is that the crash-test results lag behind newer rivals, especially for a vehicle this tall and truck-like. If safety is your top priority, you should weigh those ratings carefully against the 4Runner’s strengths elsewhere.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.56% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, plus the limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,183 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $54,841 CAD average.
• It keeps the rugged, adventure-ready character buyers value.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $57,543 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $54,841 CAD average.
• It adds more of the same rugged utility with strong reliability and cargo space.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, availability, and updated safety equipment, the 2023 is the sensible pick. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 makes sense only if you are comfortable paying more for a newer model year.
