How much does the 2023 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have softened 9.00% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 124 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and strong performance, and they also highlight the spacious third row and solid interior layout. The 4Runner’s rugged character and easy-to-use features come through clearly in owner feedback, which also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience over the long term.

The trade-offs are just as clear: it is not especially polished on-road, and fuel efficiency is a recurring concern. That makes it best suited to you if you want a traditional SUV with real utility and off-road appeal rather than a modern crossover feel.

With 27.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback repeatedly points to reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers saying they can count on it for daily use and family duties. The expert evaluation also describes it as having a reputation for legendary reliability and durability.

That said, used buyers should still expect the usual age-related ownership risks that come with an older platform, especially if the vehicle has seen hard use off-road or has been poorly maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 40th Anniversary Special Edition is based on the SR5 and adds retro body stripes, a heritage grille design, bronze 17-inch wheels, bronze badges, bronze seat and interior stitching, floor mats, and a numbered dashboard plaque. It is limited to black, white, or red paint with a black artificial leather interior. The line-up also includes the SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro, and the base setup is intentionally simple rather than lavish.
• Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-litre V6 with a five-speed automatic and standard 4WD. The Limited gets full-time 4WD, while other versions use part-time 4WD. Efficiency is not a strength, but the drivetrain is built for durability and off-road use.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
• Infotainment: The biggest touchscreen is 8 inches, and the system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Connected services are available, and higher trims can add navigation and a JBL premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates it at 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, and the road test returned 13.9 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the starting point and the basis for the 40th Anniversary Special Edition. It makes the most sense if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for extra appearance or capability upgrades.
• TRD Sport: This trim adds a suspension tuned to improve on-road athleticism, so it suits you if you want the 4Runner’s shape and utility with a slightly more road-focused setup.
• Limited: This is the best fit if you want the most comfort-oriented version, plus full-time 4WD and the available premium touches that make daily use easier.
• 40th Anniversary Special Edition: This is the best-value pick if you want the most distinctive styling and limited-production appeal, since it adds unique exterior and interior details on top of the SR5.
• TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the strongest trail focus, including a suspension that improves wheel articulation by disconnecting the sway bars.
• TRD Pro: This is the most serious off-road version, with a skid plate and a suspension tuned for high-speed dirt performance with front and rear Fox shock absorbers.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard across the range.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 124 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.00% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $54,790 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $54,794 CAD sits slightly below last year's $60,215 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the 2023 model easier to buy now than it was a year ago. For a future seller, that also means you may need to price competitively if you want to stand out against similar listings.

The 4Runner’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially among shoppers who specifically want a rugged SUV with a loyal following. Even so, resale performance will still depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with three-star ratings for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and rollover resistance. It also gets a Marginal rating from IIHS for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.

The main caveat is that the crash-test results lag behind newer rivals, especially the IIHS small-overlap result and the lower NHTSA sub-ratings.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, plus the limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,298 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $54,794 CAD average.
• It keeps the rugged, adventure-ready character alive.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $56,860 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $54,794 CAD average.
• It adds more of the same rugged utility and reliability focus.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and updated equipment, the 2023 is the sweet spot. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value path, while the 2024 makes sense only if you find a cleaner example or a feature set that justifies the higher asking price.
