CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Subaru Ascent
Summary
With 201 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,285 CAD, 29.9% of 2023 Subaru Ascent listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Subaru Ascent 4.4 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Subaru Ascent stands out as a distinctly Subaru take on the midsize three-row SUV formula. It first appeared for the 2019 model year as the brand’s successor to the Tribeca, and it brought clear Outback styling cues, standard Symmetrical all-wheel drive, and seating for seven or eight passengers depending on the second-row layout. Subaru also gave it a family-focused character with rear doors that open to 75 degrees, 19 cup holders, three-zone automatic climate control, and EyeSight driver assistance technology that includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.
For 2023, the Ascent received a mid-cycle refresh that brought a new front fascia, new LED headlights, C-shaped taillights, a larger 11.6-inch infotainment system, an available surround-view monitor, a newly available Cabin Connect intercom system, and a refreshed interior. It also offers a 260-horsepower 2.4-litre Boxer turbocharged engine, a towing capacity of up to 2,268 kilograms, and a highway fuel consumption figure as low as 9.4 L/100 km with 660 kilometres of driving range. Those numbers help explain why it appeals to buyers who want a practical family SUV with real capability.
There are trade-offs, though. The Ascent’s fuel economy is not especially impressive, and the third row is cramped. Even so, its strong safety reputation, standard all-wheel drive, generous cargo flexibility, and broad list of family-friendly features make the 2023 Subaru Ascent a compelling choice for shoppers who value space, security, and all-weather confidence.

Reviewed a 2023 Subaru Ascent on Apr 24, 2024
Having recently test drove a brand new 2024 Ascent I will have to say it drives very nice. Power was decent, fuel mileage better than average and handles well. There are only two downsides of the vehicle. 1st the space is limited and it is very close knit for a family of more than four people. The 3rd row would work well for small children, but is pretty much useless for adults for long distances. When you review interior space comparisons, it is most closely resembles the space of a Toyota Highlander or Kia Sorrento. 2nd issue is the seats. I am only 5’9” tall and find that the second and third rows are narrow for an 8 seat vehicle and the driver and front passenger seats (although look comfortable) are hard, and thigh room front to back is overly short. The passenger seat in the Subaru crossovers also feels like it slants forward making you feel like you will slide out of the seat. I have driven the Subaru on a 11 hour drive and my hips were numb less than two hours into the trip and the front leg room side to side was two narrow for me to get into a comfortable position. Overall the vehicle drives nice, has a good sound system and the updated tech is intuitive and easy to use. I prefer replaceable buttons and switches for my HVAC controls and for my off road controls, but this is 2024 and I will assume the longevity of the new electronic controls will / should last as long as the drivetrain . I like Subarus and have had great luck in the past with them, but I hate their seats.

How much does the 2023 Subaru Ascent cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $33,398 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $33,398 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $38,952 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $38,935 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −14.22% |
Prices have softened 14.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 206 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Subaru Ascent a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Subaru Ascent earns a 4.4/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners repeatedly praise its safety features, comfort, and spaciousness for families, and many also like its driving performance and fuel economy. That lines up well with its role as a practical three-row SUV for buyers who want space, security, and all-weather confidence. With 30.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Subaru Ascent reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, especially those who value safety and family use. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and interior wear, since long-term ownership risk is never zero on a family SUV.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Subaru Ascent?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully before moving quickly.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 206 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.22% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $33,398 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Subaru Ascent's resale value?
The current average of $33,398 CAD sits slightly below last year's $38,935 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For future sellers, the softer pricing means you may need to be more competitive on asking price to stand out. Even so, the Ascent’s family-friendly appeal and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand over time.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2023 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,196 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $33,398 CAD average.
- It adds an Onyx Edition with blacked-out trim and water-resistant upholstery.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $37,866 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $33,398 CAD average.
- It keeps the familiar formula with standard all-wheel drive and strong safety appeal.
The bottom line: The 2023 is the best all-around pick if you want the refreshed model-year features and a healthier mix of listings to compare. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the smarter value play; if you want a newer-year alternative and are comfortable paying more, the 2024 is the next step up.
