Is the 2023 RAM 2500 a good car?

Generally — with a 4.2/5 user rating and an expert rating of 7.5/10, this truck lands as a strong choice if you want heavy-duty capability with a more comfortable, well-equipped feel. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its power, comfort, and usefulness for towing and utility, and they also like the technology and luxury touches. The overview points to a truck that balances rugged intent with a spacious, comfortable cabin, which fits buyers who want serious work capability without giving up everyday livability.

The main trade-offs are the flimsy column shifter and difficult entry and exit, while the turbodiesel option is expensive. Even so, the market shows 31.4% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 RAM 2500 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a truck that feels dependable for towing and utility, with many owners describing it as a solid value for the work it does. It also highlights power and comfort as recurring positives, which usually matters when you plan to keep a heavy-duty truck for the long haul.

The expert notes also support that sense of durability, describing the truck as robust and capable, with a strong foundation and a refined, composed feel in daily use. Ram’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the diesel option is costly and some owners have raised reliability concerns, especially around the transmission.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 RAM 2500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Rebel stands apart with its aggressive blacked-out look, 20-inch wheels, Rebel-specific grille, and crew-cab body with a 6-foot, 4-inch cargo bed. Compared with the Power Wagon, it skips the graphics, badging, 17-inch wheels, and integrated winch, so you should make sure the equipment level matches how much off-road hardware you actually want.
• Powertrain: You get a standard 6.4-litre V8 with 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque, plus an available 6.7-litre Cummins turbodiesel inline six with 370 hp and 850 lb-ft. The V8 is the better choice if you want maximum towing and payload, while the diesel is the more efficient option but costs significantly more.
• Safety package: Ram’s driver-assistance suite includes automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking including trailer-brake support, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The truck also offers blind-spot cameras, a digital rearview mirror, and a front camera, but crash-test ratings don’t exist for this model.
• Infotainment: Look for the 12-inch digital instrumentation panel and the next-generation Uconnect 5 system with a 12-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L, navigation, and an optional 17-speaker Harman Kardon audio system are all part of the appeal, and the blind-spot camera and trailer-view features add useful tech for towing.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test truck’s Cummins diesel showed 12.3 L/100 km on mostly highway driving, 14.6 L/100 km on mountain roads, and 16.0 L/100 km off-road. By comparison, the 6.4-litre V8 returned 22.8 L/100 km on the same route and conditions.

Which 2023 RAM 2500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 RAM 2500 is offered in 7 trim levels: Tradesman, Big Horn, Rebel, Power Wagon, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• Tradesman: This is the work-focused starting point, so it makes sense if you want the core heavy-duty capability without paying for the more upscale or specialised equipment found higher up the range.
• Big Horn: This is the sensible step up if you want a better balance of everyday comfort and equipment while staying below the more premium and off-road-oriented trims.
• Rebel: This is the best-value trim if you want the truck’s standout off-road attitude, the aggressive styling, and the available diesel powertrain without going all the way to the more specialised Power Wagon.
• Power Wagon: Choose this if off-road hardware is your priority, since the expert notes describe it as the most purpose-built off-road tool in the lineup.
• Laramie: This is the trim to consider if you want a more upscale cabin and a stronger comfort focus for daily use.
• Limited Longhorn: This suits you if you want a more premium, distinctive feel and are willing to pay for it.
• Limited: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most upscale presentation in the range.

Safety content notes that Ram offers several advanced driver-assistance systems on the 2023 Heavy Duty models, and the test truck had them all.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 RAM 2500?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 468 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.06% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $66,534 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 RAM 2500's resale value?

The current average of $66,534 CAD sits slightly below last year's $75,657 CAD.

That price drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it can also mean future sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. If you buy at today’s average or below, you may have less downside risk than someone who bought when prices were higher.

The truck’s strong utility appeal should help support demand, especially among shoppers who want towing capability and a comfortable cabin in one package. If the market stays steady, well-equipped examples with desirable powertrains should remain easier to move than stripped-down trucks.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 RAM 2500 safe?

The 2023 RAM 2500 does not have crash-test ratings listed here.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Ram’s advanced driver-assistance suite includes automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with trailer-brake support, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The truck also adds useful towing-focused visibility tech such as blind-spot cameras, a digital rearview mirror, and a front camera.

The expert notes also point out that the driving aids worked well on wide two-lane highways, though their behaviour in denser traffic is less certain. Since crash-test ratings don’t exist for this truck, you should focus on how well the safety tech and visibility features suit your own driving and towing needs.

Should I buy a 2023 RAM 2500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.06% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 model year adds a new 12-inch digital instrumentation panel, blind-spot cameras, Trailer Reverse Steering Control, and other towing-focused upgrades.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, updated tech, and heavy-duty capability, the 2023 is the one to target. If you’re mainly shopping on price, a nearby model year may still make sense, but the 2023’s softer pricing and added equipment give it a compelling case.
