What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Frontier?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes S, SV Convenience, SV, Pro-4X, Midnight Edition, and SV Premium. The base S misses some comfort features that are available on higher grades, while the Pro-4X adds unique styling touches and more equipment.
• Powertrain: You get a 3.8-litre V6 with 310 hp and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The truck uses shift-on-the-fly 4WD in Canada, and the transmission can feel busy on the highway.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning, trailer sway control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a driver-attention monitor, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and rear-door alert. Traffic-sign recognition is standard on Pro-4X.
• Infotainment: Most trims use an 8-inch touchscreen, while Pro-4X gets a 9-inch system. Wireless Apple CarPlay is standard on Pro-4X, and Android Auto still requires a wired connection.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates most versions at 12.8 L/100 km in city driving, 10.2 on the highway, and 11.6 combined. The Pro-4X is rated at 13.3 L/100 km city, 10.5 highway, and 12.0 combined.

Which 2023 Nissan Frontier trim should I buy?

The 2023 Nissan Frontier is offered in 6 trim levels: S, SV Convenience, SV, Pro-4X, Midnight Edition, and SV Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, but you give up some of the comfort and convenience upgrades that make the Frontier feel more polished. It makes sense only if you want the lowest starting point and plan to keep things simple.
• SV Convenience: This is the best-value trim if you want a better-equipped truck without jumping too far up the price ladder. It adds useful everyday features while keeping the Frontier’s practical character intact.
• SV: Choose this if you want a balanced middle ground and do not need the extra styling or off-road focus of the upper trims.
• Midnight Edition: This trim is mainly about appearance, with blacked-out exterior and interior details. It suits you if style matters more than capability upgrades.
• Pro-4X: This is the most capable and feature-rich choice, with unique wheels, Lava Red interior accents, a larger 9-inch infotainment system, a six-speaker audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay, and off-road-oriented hardware. It is the right pick if you want the most complete Frontier experience.
• SV Premium: This trim is the best fit if you want a more upscale cabin, including the available premium audio system, without moving all the way to the Pro-4X’s off-road focus.

Traffic-sign recognition is standard on Pro-4X.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Nissan Frontier?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 139 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.20% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $41,759 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Nissan Frontier's resale value?

The current average of $41,771 CAD sits slightly below last year's $43,150 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Frontier has become a bit more accessible for used buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to stay competitive on asking price. If the market continues to favour shoppers, resale values may remain under some pressure in the near term.

Even so, the Frontier’s strong reputation for value and its broad appeal should help support demand. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Nissan Frontier safe?

The 2023 Nissan Frontier earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star side-crash results, four-star frontal-crash results, and three-star rollover results.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision warning, trailer sway control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a driver-attention monitor, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and rear-door alert. Traffic-sign recognition is standard on Pro-4X.

The main caveat is the lower rollover result, which keeps the overall NHTSA score from reaching five stars.

Should I buy a 2023 Nissan Frontier or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.20% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 adds more standard features while keeping the Frontier’s simple, familiar character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $38,650 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $41,771 CAD average.
• It offers a redesigned truck feel with updated styling and real off-road capability.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped and more current used Frontier, the 2023 is the stronger all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is worth a look because it delivers much of the same core appeal for less.

How does the 2023 Nissan Frontier compare to the 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

2023 Nissan Frontier:

• Pros: Nice range of color options, Impressive stereo upgrade, Excellent value for money.
• Cons: Sluggish transmission, Poor fuel economy.

2023 Toyota Tacoma:

• Pros: Stylish design, Great off-road capability, Excellent reputation for reliability.
• Cons: Poor fuel economy, Cramped back seat, Outdated technology.

Our experts score the 2023 Nissan Frontier 8.3/10 and the 2023 Toyota Tacoma 7.3/10. The Frontier comes across as the better value and the more modern-feeling choice, especially if you care about its stereo upgrade and colour choices. The Tacoma counters with a stronger off-road reputation and a long-standing reliability image, but it also brings an older-feeling tech package and a cramped back seat. If you want the better all-around used buy, the Frontier has the edge; if off-road credibility matters most, the Tacoma still has a clear appeal.
