Is the 2023 Nissan Altima a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Nissan Altima earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its fuel economy, responsive driving experience, and quality audio system. The Altima also appeals as a practical, comfortable, easy-to-live-with sedan with standard all-wheel drive and straightforward technology. On the trade-off side, experts point to fairly pedestrian performance and poor visibility, while owners also note that wireless connectivity is missed by some shoppers.

For buyers who want a traditional family car rather than an SUV, the Altima’s value-focused positioning and standard equipment make it especially relevant. It also shows 41.9% good or great deals in the market, which supports its appeal for bargain-minded shoppers.

Is the 2023 Nissan Altima reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to dependable, cost-effective ownership, with repeated praise for fuel economy and a car that feels easy to count on day to day. The CVT is described as a good one, and Nissan’s long experience building it helps reinforce confidence in the drivetrain. The Altima also benefits from standard all-wheel drive and a straightforward mechanical setup that should suit buyers looking for a practical long-term commuter.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about outright reliability and more about whether the car’s modest performance and cabin quality will meet your expectations over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Altima?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Altima comes in S, SR trim, SR Premium, and Platinum. The base version gets the essentials, while higher trims add more visual presence and equipment; the Platinum also adds a surround-view camera system.
• Powertrain: Every Canadian Altima uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. The engine is adequate, and the CVT is tuned to feel more like a traditional automatic.
• Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a driver monitoring system, rear-seat reminder, Easy Fill Tire Alert, rear automatic braking, and automatic high-beam headlights. ProPilot Assist is included on SR Premium and Platinum and adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio with 360L. A 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard on SR Premium and Platinum and adds wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, navigation, and wireless charging.
• Fuel efficiency: Official Natural Resources Canada fuel economy ratings are 9.1 L/100 km city, 6.5 L/100 km highway, and 7.9 L/100 km combined in the base trim, or 9.3 L/100 km city, 6.7 L/100 km highway, and 8.1 L/100 km combined for the SR, SR Premium, and Platinum.

Which 2023 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?

The 2023 Nissan Altima is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SR trim, SR Premium, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest-cost way into the Altima’s standard all-wheel drive, core safety tech, and basic infotainment. It suits you best if you care more about practicality than extras.
• SR trim: This is the step-up choice if you want a sportier look and a more upscale feel without jumping too far in price. It adds visual appeal and is a sensible middle ground for many shoppers.
• SR Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want the biggest jump in everyday convenience and technology. It adds the 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, Bose audio, and ProPilot Assist.
• Platinum: Choose this if you want the most fully equipped Altima, including the surround-view camera system and the same upgraded tech and driver-assist features as SR Premium.

The safety package is standard across the range, while ProPilot Assist is reserved for SR Premium and Platinum.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Nissan Altima?

It looks like a buyer’s market for this model year.

• Deal availability: 41.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 93 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.95% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $22,684 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Nissan Altima's resale value?

The current average of $22,711 CAD sits slightly below last year's $26,704 CAD.

That decline suggests the Altima is currently a softer-market buy, which can be good for you now but may limit upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the current pricing trend means you may need to be more competitive when it’s time to list. On the other hand, the model’s practical appeal and standard all-wheel drive should help keep it relevant with used buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Nissan Altima safe?

The 2023 Altima earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a five-star rollover resistance rating, though it receives four-star ratings for front passenger frontal impact safety. It also earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS, but receives a Poor rating in the updated IIHS side-impact test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every version and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a driver monitoring system, rear-seat reminder, Easy Fill Tire Alert, rear automatic braking, and automatic high-beam headlights. ProPilot Assist is included on SR Premium and Platinum and adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist.

The main caveat is the Poor IIHS side-impact result, so if safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to how the Altima’s crash-test profile fits your needs.

Should I buy a 2023 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 41.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.95% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• This year combines standard all-wheel drive with strong safety ratings and easy-to-use technology.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,984 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $22,711 CAD average.
• It offers standard all-wheel drive and a simpler trim structure.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $25,789 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $22,711 CAD average.
• It adds subtle updates and an upgraded touchscreen on higher trims.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, standard equipment, and market availability, the 2023 is the strongest starting point. If you’re shopping strictly on value, the 2023 also looks more attractive than the 2024, while the 2022 is worth considering only if you find a cleaner or better-equipped example.
