CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 26 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,276 CAD, 53.8% of 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by delivering a more upscale feel than many buyers expect from a compact car. It is described as bringing luxury-level comfort and refined performance without the premium price tag, and that character is reflected in its upscale interior and sharp, refined handling and acceleration. For shoppers who want a small car that feels polished rather than basic, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
The hatchback body style adds another layer of usefulness, with helpful cargo space and a rear liftgate that give it SUV-like versatility. That makes the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 especially appealing for everyday use, since it can cover many of the tasks people often look to a small SUV to handle. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system is frustrating to use, and the large C-pillar limits rear visibility.

The Good: Interior looks great, exterior looks great. Oil pan plug and filter are very easy to access. Sound system is great (thanks bose). Media center knob is better than a touch screen. Manual transmission + snow tires makes this car one of the best Ive had in New England winters traction-wise. Good gas mileage. The Bad... THE WHOLE THING RATTLES on the interior and Mazda will not address it. They cannot guarantee it is a warrantee issue and will not look at the car w/o assessing the hourly shop fees, even though the car is well within warrantee . Car is just over a year old with <20k miles and rattles worse than the 22 y/o CRV it replaced. Engine is very underpowered and turbo charger is not available w/manual shift transmission. The key fob is annoying beyond words, the car seemingly decides when it will/wont lock which is a fun feature. Shift knob leather is very cheap and is already peeling from normal use. Rear window visibility is almost non-existent even with a hatchback. Heads up display cannot be disabled permanently, has to be shut off every time. Windshield spray goes everywhere but the windshield. Windshield washer fluid low warning takes over entire speedometer, seems safe. No heated mirrors in the premium package you are forced to buy to get the manual transmission. Unlock button on the rear hatch does not work for the passenger doors. First new car Ive ever owned and cant say I would buy another Mazda again based off of this experience. Again, aesthetically Mazda is not challenged by many other brands in this price range. However, the quality of the vehicle is definitely not what I came to expect from anecdotal evidence nor what I read online prior to purchase.

Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating, which supports its appeal if you want a compact car that feels more upscale than basic. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
The overview points to luxury-level comfort, refined performance, and an upscale interior, while the expert drive data highlights sharp handling, strong acceleration, and a hatchback body style that adds useful cargo space and rear liftgate versatility. The main trade-offs are the frustrating infotainment system and the large C-pillar that limits rear visibility.
That mix makes the MAZDA3 especially appealing if you want a small car that can cover everyday duties with a more polished feel than many rivals. 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview and expert drive data both point to a car that prioritises refinement, driving enjoyment, and premium feel over gimmicks. The performance coverage also emphasises a communicative chassis, well-weighted steering, and a composed ride, which are all encouraging signs for day-to-day durability in how the car feels over time.

For used buyers, the biggest ownership risk is that the technology and rear visibility drawbacks may remain frustrating even if the mechanical package suits you well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The GX starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The GS adds dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, while the Luxury package brings synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a moonroof. The GT adds 18-inch alloy wheels, paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery.
- Powertrain: The base engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. A 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine is optional on GS and standard on GT, making 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. A turbocharged 2.5-litre is available on the GT and makes 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium fuel.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The GS adds forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The GT adds adaptive headlights, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
- Infotainment: The standard display is 8.8 inches, and it is operated by a rotary dial rather than a touchscreen. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the interface is clumsy and the learning curve is steep. Higher-spec models can add navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada ratings for the base 2.0-litre engine range from 8.4 to 8.7 L/100 km in the city, 6.4 to 6.7 on the highway, and 7.6 to 7.8 combined. The non-turbo 2.5-litre is rated at 8.6 to 9.0 L/100 km city, 6.4 to 7.0 highway, and 7.6 to 8.1 combined. The turbo hatchback averages 10.1 L/100 km city, 7.5 highway, and 8.9 combined.
Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 4 trim levels: GX, GS, GT, and GT Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- GX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Mazda3 experience with heated front seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the 8.8-inch display. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but the safety and convenience equipment are more limited than on higher trims.
- GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort and safety upgrades, including dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, and a much fuller driver-assistance package. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to focus on.
- GT: This trim adds the more premium-feeling features, including leather upholstery, a head-up display, navigation, paddle shifters, and 18-inch wheels. It suits you if you want the Mazda3 to feel more upscale and are willing to pay for it.
- GT Turbo: This is the performance-oriented choice, with the more powerful turbocharged engine and standard AWD. It is the right pick if you care most about acceleration and stronger passing power.
The GT grade adds the most complete safety package, including adaptive headlights, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 176 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.94% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $25,145 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $25,231 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,708 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you better buying leverage today than a year ago. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, trim, and how well the car is equipped.
The MAZDA3’s premium feel and strong driving character should help it stay appealing to used shoppers. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings in its front crash tests and rollover test from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the GS adds forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The GT adds adaptive headlights, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
The main caveat is the hatchback’s massive C-pillar, which creates a serious blind spot. The infotainment layout can also be distracting because it is difficult to use on the move.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It combines upscale feel, refined handling, and hatchback versatility.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $22,554 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $25,231 CAD average.
- It offers stylish design, enjoyable driving manners, and strong safety ratings.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $26,780 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,231 CAD average.
- It adds broad configuration flexibility with a more polished, upscale character.
The bottom line: Choose the 2023 if you want the strongest balance of price, refinement, and everyday usefulness. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the better value play; if you want more configuration flexibility and a newer-year feel, the 2024 is worth a look.
