Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by bringing a more upscale feel to the compact-car class without asking buyers to pay a luxury-car price. Mazda’s aim is to deliver luxury-level performance and cabin quality without the luxury price, and this car is presented as a strong example of that approach. It is also described as a reminder of how well a hatchback can work in everyday life, with SUV-like versatility thanks to added cargo space and a rear liftgate.
What makes the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 especially appealing is the way it combines refined performance with an upscale interior. The expert test drive data highlights sharp, refined handling and acceleration, along with helpful cargo space. That said, it is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system is described as maddening, and the massive C-pillar obstructs the rear view. Even so, the overall impression is of a small car that feels more polished and more versatile than many shoppers might expect.

Reviewed a 2023 Mazda 2.5 S Premium Hatchback FWD on Jan 4, 2024
The Good: Interior looks great, exterior looks great. Oil pan plug and filter are very easy to access. Sound system is great (thanks bose). Media center knob is better than a touch screen. Manual transmission + snow tires makes this car one of the best Ive had in New England winters traction-wise. Good gas mileage. The Bad... THE WHOLE THING RATTLES on the interior and Mazda will not address it. They cannot guarantee it is a warrantee issue and will not look at the car w/o assessing the hourly shop fees, even though the car is well within warrantee . Car is just over a year old with <20k miles and rattles worse than the 22 y/o CRV it replaced. Engine is very underpowered and turbo charger is not available w/manual shift transmission. The key fob is annoying beyond words, the car seemingly decides when it will/wont lock which is a fun feature. Shift knob leather is very cheap and is already peeling from normal use. Rear window visibility is almost non-existent even with a hatchback. Heads up display cannot be disabled permanently, has to be shut off every time. Windshield spray goes everywhere but the windshield. Windshield washer fluid low warning takes over entire speedometer, seems safe. No heated mirrors in the premium package you are forced to buy to get the manual transmission. Unlock button on the rear hatch does not work for the passenger doors. First new car Ive ever owned and cant say I would buy another Mazda again based off of this experience. Again, aesthetically Mazda is not challenged by many other brands in this price range. However, the quality of the vehicle is definitely not what I came to expect from anecdotal evidence nor what I read online prior to purchase.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal if you want a compact car that feels more upscale than many rivals. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
The overview frames it as a compact car that delivers a luxury-like cabin and performance feel without luxury-car pricing, and it also highlights hatchback versatility with added cargo space and a rear liftgate. That makes it especially appealing if you want everyday practicality without giving up a polished driving experience.
The main trade-offs are the maddening infotainment system and the massive C-pillar that obstructs the rear view. Those drawbacks matter most if you value easy tech use and rear visibility over style and driving polish.
With 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview and expert test drive data both point to a car that feels well sorted in daily use, with a refined cabin and a driving experience that stands out in the compact class. The performance notes also emphasise communicative steering, balanced handling, and a ride that stays comfortable rather than punishing.
That said, the ownership experience may be shaped more by how much you tolerate the technology and visibility compromises than by mechanical concerns. For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is ending up with a car whose frustrating interface and rear blind spot outweigh its strengths.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The GX starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The GS adds dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, while the Luxury package brings synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a moonroof. The GT adds 18-inch alloy wheels, paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery.
- Powertrain: The base 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. A 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine makes 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and the turbocharged 2.5-litre makes 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium fuel.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The GS adds forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The GT adds adaptive headlights, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
- Infotainment: The standard 8.8-inch display is controlled by a centre-console dial rather than touch input. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and higher trims can add navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada ratings for the base 2.0-litre engine range from 8.4 to 8.7 L/100 km in the city, 6.4 to 6.7 on the highway, and 7.6 to 7.8 combined. The non-turbo 2.5-litre ranges from 8.6 to 9.0 L/100 km city, 6.4 to 7.0 highway, and 7.6 to 8.1 combined. The turbo averages 10.1 L/100 km city, 7.3 to 7.5 highway, and 8.8 to 8.9 combined.
Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 4 trim levels: GX, GS, GT, and GT Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- GX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Mazda3 experience with heated front seats, keyless entry, pushbutton start, and the standard infotainment setup. It suits you if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live without the extra comfort and safety features higher trims add.
- GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds dual-zone climate control and a heated steering wheel, and it can be paired with the Luxury package for a more upscale cabin. It also unlocks a broader safety suite, which makes it the smart middle ground.
- GT: This trim layers on the more premium equipment, including a head-up display, navigation, genuine leather upholstery, and the GT safety upgrades. It makes sense if you want the most polished non-turbo version.
- GT Turbo: This is the performance-focused choice, with the more powerful turbocharged engine and standard AWD. It suits you if acceleration and all-weather traction matter more than fuel economy.
The GT grade adds the broader safety equipment, including adaptive headlights, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 156 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.45% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $25,375 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $25,428 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,716 CAD.
That price decline suggests buyers have more negotiating room today than they did a year ago. For a future seller, it also means the market has already adjusted downward, so condition, trim, and equipment will matter more when you go to resell.
Because the model still has strong appeal as an upscale-feeling compact car, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than less distinctive rivals. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings in its front crash tests and rollover test from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the GS adds forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The GT adds adaptive headlights, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
The main caveat is the hatchback’s massive C-pillar, which creates a serious blind spot. The infotainment layout can also be distracting because it is difficult to use without taking your eyes off the road.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It pairs upscale cabin quality with sharp, refined handling and helpful cargo space.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $23,094 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $25,428 CAD average.
- It delivers strong value with a stylish, fun-to-drive character.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $26,702 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,428 CAD average.
- It adds a broader mix of body styles, drivetrains, and engines.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, polish, and availability, the 2023 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2022 is the better value path; if you want a wider configuration range and are willing to pay more, the 2024 is worth a look.
