Is the 2023 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.88/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its fuel economy, safety features, and value for the price, and many also like the stylish design and tech features. The Elantra is framed as a roomy, safe, efficient, and technologically advanced alternative to an SUV, which makes it especially appealing if you want practicality without moving up to a larger vehicle. The main trade-offs are the potentially polarising design and some concerns about interior quality and cabin noise.

With 32.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.

Is the 2023 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free for many shoppers, with repeated praise for value, fuel economy, safety, and the kind of ownership experience people can count on. The expert evaluation also describes the Elantra as a cost-effective choice with Hyundai’s 5-year, 100,000-kilometre bumper-to-bumper warranty and roadside assistance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that some examples may show the interior-quality and cabin-noise complaints owners mention.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Elantra Essential is the value play, while the Preferred and Luxury trims add more upscale equipment and presentation. The Luxury trim especially stands out for feeling more premium than its price suggests, but the base trim leaves out some of the richer tech and comfort touches.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with a CVT/IVT and front-wheel drive. If you want a dual-clutch transmission and an independent multi-link rear suspension, look at the N Line Ultimate, the Elantra Hybrid, or the Elantra N.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, a full complement of airbags, ABS with electronic brake force distribution, a driver monitoring system, and a rear-seat reminder system. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, Highway Driving Assist, safe exit warning, cyclist detection, and intersection turning assist.
• Infotainment: The available 10.25-inch digital instrumentation and 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment setup is a major draw. It includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, connected services, dynamic voice recognition, navigation, and a wireless charging pad, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto require a USB connection rather than wireless use.
• Fuel efficiency: The hybrid is rated at 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving. The tested non-hybrid model averaged 7.1 L/100 km during evaluation, against an official NRCan rating of 6.7 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2023 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 6 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Hybrid, N Line Ultimate, and N.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Elantra lineup. It gives you the core Elantra experience, but you’ll miss out on the richer cabin presentation and the upgraded tech that make the higher trims more appealing.
• Preferred: This is the trim to watch if you want the best balance of price and equipment. It can be paired with the 10.25-inch digital instrumentation and infotainment displays as part of a package, making it a smart middle-ground choice.
• Luxury: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers. It adds the more upscale cabin feel, the 10.25-inch digital instrumentation and infotainment displays, and the premium-feeling equipment that makes the Elantra feel far more expensive than it is.
• Hybrid: Choose this if fuel efficiency is your top priority. It combines the Luxury trim’s equipment with the hybrid powertrain and its 4.7 L/100 km combined consumption figure.
• N Line Ultimate: Pick this if you want a more engaging drive and the dual-clutch transmission and independent multi-link rear suspension. It also gets the 10.25-inch digital instrumentation and infotainment displays.
• N: This is the choice for maximum performance and the only one with a manual transmission. It is the most focused driver’s model in the lineup.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, while higher trims add more advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Hyundai Elantra?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and enough deal activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 664 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.63% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $20,899 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $20,919 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,672 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Elantra is currently more buyer-friendly than it was a year ago, which can make it harder for a future seller to command top dollar immediately. On the other hand, the model’s broad appeal, strong value reputation, and efficient ownership profile should help it stay relevant with used shoppers. If you buy well now, you may be starting from a more realistic price base than someone who bought when the market was hotter.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2023 Elantra earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star frontal crash protection and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA crash-test categories.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, a full complement of airbags, ABS with electronic brake force distribution, a driver monitoring system, and a rear-seat reminder system. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, Highway Driving Assist, safe exit warning, cyclist detection, and intersection turning assist.

One caveat is that the Elantra’s NHTSA frontal crash protection result trails its otherwise strong crash-test performance.

Should I buy a 2023 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong value, broad trim choice, and a Top Safety Pick rating.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $18,790 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $20,919 CAD average.
• It is a value-focused compact sedan with strong safety and excellent fuel economy.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $22,683 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $20,919 CAD average.
• It adds more style and standard equipment.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the sweet spot if you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and equipment without paying more for the newer refresh. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 is the better price-first choice; if you want the latest styling and added standard gear, the 2024 is worth a look.
