Is the Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the Hyundai Elantra is a strong used-car pick if you want value, efficiency, and a wide spread of trims and powertrains. The all-generations owner rating is 4.43/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise the Elantra for its fuel economy, comfortable interiors, and overall value for money. Reviewers also consistently highlight its safety features and useful technology, which help it work well as a daily commuter and family car.
Expert reviews rate the 2021 and 2017 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs across the more recent expert-reviewed years centre on the polarising styling, the underwhelming base engine, and interior materials that feel cheap. Even so, the Elantra’s mix of practicality, equipment, and efficiency makes it an appealing used buy for shoppers who want a compact car with broad everyday appeal.
30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Hyundai Elantra models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently praise the Elantra for its fuel economy, comfort, value, and useful technology. Across the model years in the data, it comes across as a practical compact car that many shoppers find easy to live with.
- Owners rate the Hyundai Elantra between 3.0 and 4.88 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-maintained example and checking service history carefully, especially on older model years.
What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Elantra?
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Hyundai SmartSense suite, with forward braking assist, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, lane following assist, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor; Preferred-grade models add blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit assist.
- Infotainment: 8-inch touchscreen on Essential and Preferred trims, with a 10.25-inch touchscreen standard on Luxury and above; the smaller screen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The Elantra Hybrid is rated at 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 4.5 on the highway, and 4.7 combined; non-hybrid trims are rated at 7.7 L/100 km city, 5.9 highway, and 6.9 combined for the base engine, and 8.3/6.8/7.6 for the N Line Ultimate.
Which Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2024 Hyundai Elantra offers these trims:
- Essential: The entry trim gives you the core Elantra experience with the 2.0-litre engine and the model’s value-first approach.
- Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit assist.
- Luxury: This trim adds the 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital instrument panel, Bose audio, wireless charging, and Highway Driving Assist.
- Luxury Hybrid: This version adds the hybrid powertrain while keeping the Luxury trim’s equipment mix.
- N Line Ultimate: This trim adds the 1.6-litre turbo engine, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, sportier hardware, and the most expressive design treatment.
- N: The performance-focused model adds the 276-horsepower turbocharged setup and the most aggressive driving character.
What Hyundai Elantra do most buyers choose?
The Hyundai Elantra years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 904 | 32.5% |
| 2025 | 742 | 32.9% |
| 2023 | 664 | 32.5% |
| 2022 | 648 | 33% |
| 2021 | 599 | 32.2% |
| 2026 | 537 | 33.3% |
These higher-volume years tend to be the most popular used picks because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, colour, and price. They also sit close to the current generation, so you get newer features and a broader spread of equipment choices.
What is the Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | $12,214 CAD | −21.06% |
| 2017 | $10,241 CAD | −16.42% |
| 2020 | $14,676 CAD | −14.65% |
| 2018 | $12,100 CAD | −14.29% |
| 2021 | $17,586 CAD | −13.19% |
| 2014 | $6,942 CAD | −13.16% |
| 2022 | $18,790 CAD | −12.38% |
| 2024 | $22,683 CAD | −12.07% |
| 2025 | $24,732 CAD | −11.84% |
| 2023 | $20,919 CAD | −11.63% |
| 2015 | $7,901 CAD | −9.23% |
| 2016 | $8,809 CAD | −8.41% |
Most Elantra model years are down by double digits year over year, which creates better buying opportunities for used shoppers. The newer years in the table are also falling, so recent-model inventory is becoming more attractive without needing to step far back in age. A few older years are declining less sharply, which suggests they have been a bit steadier in the market.
The 2016, 2015, and 2023 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Hyundai Elantra now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −11.84% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −12.07%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 32.9% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 32.5%.

Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The latest Elantra offers four engines and five transmissions, with the 2.0-litre inline-four making 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, while the N Line’s 1.6-litre turbo-four makes 201 hp and 195 lb-ft.
- Tech: The latest Elantra offers an 8-inch touchscreen or a 10.25-inch touchscreen, plus wireless charging and Highway Driving Assist on higher trims.
- Safety: The latest Elantra adds or improves driver-assistance coverage with blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection, junction turning assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and highway driving assist.
- Starting price: The Elantra starts in Canada at $24,559 for the Essential trim.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Absolutely the best car I have ever owned! I bought it in 2015 as a certified pre-owned vehicle and never once did I have any mechanical issues other than just this year the pump for the windshield wiper fluid finally went out. However, my boyfriend and I were able to repair that on our own. I planned on keeping this car a good long time as I take care of my vehicles. Unfortunately I was rear-ended in October and the vehicle was totaled. Im putting my faith once again into Hyundai and buying a certified pre-owned 2020 Kona that I have researched heavily. I loved my Elantra and found it to be an excellent vehicle. I very much hope to have the same exact experience with my Kona as when I test drove a 2018 which had the same engine as the 2020 I found it extremely responsive, fantastic breaking, smooth ride even on bumpy bad roads, major safety features, very powerful, and felt just like my Elantra to drive.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra stands out as a thorough redesign that brings a fresh look inside and out, along with a strong emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety. It is presented as a compact car that builds on a very competent outgoing generation while offering some of the best styling, ergonomics, safety, and technology available for the money. That combination gives it broad appeal for buyers who want a small car that feels more polished than basic transportation.
What makes the 2017 Hyundai Elantra especially appealing is how well it balances everyday practicality with comfort and value. Driver feedback reinforces that impression, with owners praising its comfortable seating, fuel efficiency, and value for money, while also appreciating its advanced technology.
