Generally — the 2023 Honda HR-V earns a 4.4/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Cost effectiveness.

Drivers consistently praise the smooth ride, the generous feature content, and the strong value for the price. The HR-V also stands out as a full redesign with a more modern foundation, and it is aimed at buyers who want everyday usability, safety, and equipment rather than speed.

The main trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and the lack of a hybrid option. Even so, the 2023 HR-V’s mix of standard equipment and polished top-trim feel makes it appealing if you want a small SUV that feels more upscale than its price suggests.

With 28.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to find attractive pricing in the market.

Honda’s three-year/60,000-kilometre limited warranty and five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain limited warranty help support peace of mind early in ownership.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the slower acceleration and fuel economy will suit your needs over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Honda HR-V?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is the most affordable version and comes with heated front seats, heated side mirrors, a 7-inch colour touchscreen, and standard Honda Sensing. Sport adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone climate control, a power moonroof, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, and a more aggressive exterior look. EX-L is the most polished trim, with perforated leather seats, additional shoulder support, a larger infotainment display, and more premium cabin touches.
• Powertrain: You get a single 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT. The HR-V is tuned more for everyday usability than strong acceleration, and AWD is standard on the top two trims.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard on every trim and includes adaptive cruise control, collision-mitigation braking, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, road-departure mitigation, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot information, and rear cross-traffic alert. EX-L also adds front and rear parking sensors.
• Infotainment: LX and Sport use wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with a 7-inch touchscreen and 7-inch digital gauge cluster. EX-L upgrades to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 9-inch infotainment display, Qi-compatible wireless charging, and Wi-Fi capability.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the HR-V at 9.1 L/100 km city, 7.4 highway, and 8.3 combined with FWD, or 9.4 city, 7.8 highway, and 8.7 combined with AWD.

Which 2023 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?

The 2023 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX-L.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want the full Honda Sensing safety suite, heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and standard smartphone integration. It makes the most sense if you care more about core equipment than luxury touches.
• Sport: This is the best-value upgrade if you want a more distinctive look and a nicer day-to-day cabin without jumping to the top price. You get the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone climate control, a power moonroof, and a six-speaker audio system.
• EX-L: This is the trim to buy if you want the most complete HR-V experience. It adds perforated leather seats, the 9-inch display, wireless smartphone integration, wireless charging, an eight-speaker audio system, and parking sensors, making it the most upscale choice.

Honda Sensing is standard across the lineup, so even the base trim gets the core safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Honda HR-V?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should be able to shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 277 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.71% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $27,939 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Honda HR-V's resale value?

The current average of $27,939 CAD sits slightly below last year's $30,606 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations if the market stays competitive. The current trend suggests the HR-V is not in a strong appreciation phase, so resale value will depend more on condition, mileage, and trim than on broad market momentum.

Because the model has strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal as a practical small SUV, it should still attract steady interest from used shoppers. Well-equipped trims and clean examples are likely to hold demand better than stripped-down versions.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Honda HR-V safe?

The 2023 Honda HR-V receives a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing is standard on every trim and includes adaptive cruise control, collision-mitigation braking, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, road-departure mitigation, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, automatic high-beams, blind-spot information, and rear cross-traffic alert. EX-L also adds front and rear parking sensors.

A notable strength is that Honda now makes the full safety suite standard, including adaptive cruise control on the base trim. That said, the HR-V’s safety story is strongest because of its equipment list and IIHS result rather than any standout crash-test detail beyond that top designation.

Should I buy a 2023 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.71% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• Honda’s 2023 redesign brings the new architecture, standard Honda Sensing, and a more polished overall feel.

The bottom line: If you want the redesigned HR-V with standard safety tech and a more modern cabin, the 2023 is the one to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may still want to compare nearby years, but the 2023 is the better pick when you want the updated package and a strong mix of value, safety, and everyday usability.
