Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.57/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its technology, safety features, comfort, and solid performance. The user feedback also points to a user-friendly interface and capability in handling different driving conditions.

That lines up well with the Tiguan’s role as a roomy-feeling compact SUV from a mainstream brand, especially if you want a familiar formula with a bit more polish. With 27.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some market flexibility for shoppers.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

Owners rate it 4.57/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback highlights the Tiguan as a vehicle people can count on for technology, safety, comfort, and solid performance. It also suggests the SUV handles different driving conditions well, which supports its everyday dependability.

Volkswagen’s standard warranty plan includes four years of roadside assistance, a four-year/80,000-kilometre new-vehicle limited warranty, and a five-year, 100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some owners have reported infotainment customisation frustrations and build-quality concerns after accidents.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Trendline is the most stripped-down version, with MIB2, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and Bluetooth, while higher trims add more polish, more advanced tech, and richer cabin materials. The Highline R-Line stands out with perforated and piped leather upholstery, touch-sensing steering wheel and climate controls, ambient lighting, and a more upscale cabin feel.
• Powertrain: Every 2022 Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and 4Motion AWD. It can feel a bit delayed off the line, so test low-speed response carefully.
• Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, while Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, and Emergency Assist can slow the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.
• Infotainment: Most versions use an 8-inch touchscreen with MIB3, Car-Net connected services, App-Connect smartphone mirroring, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The Highline R-Line adds a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display, a redesigned navigation system, and a nine-speaker Fender audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says R-Line grades will do no better than 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Comfortline R-Line Black Edition, and Highline R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• Trendline: This is the entry point, but it is also the most basic version, with the older MIB2 system, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and Bluetooth instead of the more advanced MIB3 setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Tiguan, but it gives up a lot of the polish and convenience found higher up the range.
• Comfortline: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds keyless entry with push-button start and remote start, while moving you into the more modern MIB3 infotainment setup. If you want a balanced mix of equipment and price, this is the trim to focus on.
• Comfortline R-Line Black Edition: This trim adds the sportier R-Line look and a blacked-out appearance package. Choose it if styling matters to you more than maximum value.
• Highline R-Line: This is the most luxurious and best-equipped version, with the richer cabin, 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, redesigned navigation, Fender audio, and standard Park Assist. It suits you if you want the most upscale Tiguan experience.

The Highline R-Line also gets standard Park Assist, while the other trims do not.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price movement to create opportunities.

• Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 576 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.72% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,229 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $25,347 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,721 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Tiguan has moved into a more buyer-friendly phase, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract attention if they price competitively. The current market also shows a fairly tight spread between the year-round low and high, which points to steady demand rather than dramatic swings.

If you own one and keep it in good condition, the Tiguan’s broad appeal as a practical compact SUV should help support resale interest. Well-equipped trims may hold attention better, especially when they include the features shoppers expect in this segment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.57/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Front Assist, which includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and Side Assist, which adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, are standard. Travel Assist, with adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assistance, is available, and Emergency Assist can bring the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.

The main caveat is that Travel Assist can be awkward to engage because of the touch-sensing steering-wheel controls, so you should confirm it is active before relying on it.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.72% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.57/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a light refresh and new safety technology while keeping the Tiguan’s roomy, familiar formula.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $27,507 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $25,347 CAD average.
• It is larger inside and offers a third-row seat.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better pick if you want the strongest value and a refreshed version of the Tiguan’s proven formula. If you can stretch for the 2023 and want more interior space, that newer model is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2022.
