What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE is the lower-priced entry point, while the XSE adds more premium equipment. The SE gives you the core RAV4 Prime experience, but the XSE brings extras such as a panoramic glass sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a larger touchscreen, and available Technology Package content that includes navigation, a head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, surround-view camera, and parking sensors with automatic braking.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a battery pack and dual electric motors, plus standard AWD. The setup is designed to let you drive on electricity alone when the battery is charged, while still giving you gasoline backup for longer trips.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The SE uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and connected services. The XSE upgrades to a 9-inch touchscreen and adds a premium JBL sound system, while the Technology Package brings additional convenience tech.
• Fuel efficiency: In hybrid mode, it earns 6.0 L/100 km. The expert test also notes an average of 5.5 L/100 km over a week of mixed electric and gasoline use.

Which 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime is offered in 2 trim levels: SE and XSE.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the value play if you want the RAV4 Prime’s core plug-in hybrid capability, standard AWD, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, and the 8-inch touchscreen without paying for the extra luxury and tech upgrades. It suits you best if you want the most affordable way into the model.
• XSE: This is the better choice if you want the most complete version of the RAV4 Prime. It adds the larger 9-inch touchscreen, JBL audio, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, and available Technology Package content such as navigation, a head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, surround-view camera, and parking sensors with automatic braking.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim for the core safety suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and compare condition, equipment, and pricing.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 136 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.67% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $41,544 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime's resale value?

The current average of $42,232 CAD sits slightly below last year's $46,243 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more buyer-friendly, which can help future sellers if they bought at a lower entry point. It also means you may not see the same resale upside that comes with a tighter supply environment. Even so, the model’s strong reputation and broad appeal should help support demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime safe?

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime earns top marks for occupant protection from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, though the IIHS has not fully assessed its safety features for an overall rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard. One caveat is that the lane-centring system can feel unnatural at times, especially on imperfect highway markings or winding roads.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 carries over without major changes, so you are not missing a significant update.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $36,546 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $42,232 CAD average.
• It introduced the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid powertrain and made a strong first impression with efficiency and performance.

The bottom line: If you want the current-year version with softened pricing and strong market availability, the 2022 is the safer all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better value path and still delivers the core RAV4 Prime experience.
