Is the 2022 Kia Sportage a good car?

Generally — with a 4/5 user rating and an expert rating of 7.67/10 — the 2022 Kia Sportage looks like a solid pick if you want a compact crossover that feels current without chasing the newest shape on the road.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its features, value, performance upgrades, and comfortable interior. That lines up well with the Sportage’s role as a compact SUV that sits in the middle of Kia’s five-SUV lineup and offers a mix of style, sophistication, safety, and available turbocharged performance.

With 35.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Kia Sportage reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a vehicle that many shoppers found dependable in day-to-day use, with praise centred on its features, value, and performance upgrades. The expert review also describes the Sportage as a practical, easy-to-live-with crossover with a smooth ride and a broad feature set.

Kia’s straightforward controls and familiar layout should help keep ownership simple, and the model’s established design can be reassuring for used buyers who want something proven rather than experimental.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some examples may show the same compromises owners mention most often: rear-seat space, acceleration, and prior-condition concerns.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Kia Sportage?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The EX and SX add more safety equipment than the lower trims, while the LX Nightsky is a new-for-2022 version that replaces the LX S. If you want the most complete feature set, the higher trims are the ones to focus on.
• Powertrain: Most Sportages use a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, while the SX gets a turbocharged setup with 237 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The six-speed automatic is standard, and all-wheel drive is standard on all grades except the entry-level LX FWD.
• Safety package: The EX and SX include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is also included on those trims and on the LX Nightsky.
• Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SX adds UVO Intelligence connected services, satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging, and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: No fuel-consumption figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2022 Kia Sportage trim should I buy?

The 2022 Kia Sportage is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, LX Nightsky, EX, EX Premium S, and SX.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Sportage lineup and are comfortable with the most basic equipment.
• LX Nightsky: This new-for-2022 trim replaces the LX S and adds blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, making it a smarter pick if you want a little more safety equipment without jumping too far up the range.
• EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the core driver-assistance suite, plus a standard panoramic sunroof for 2022 and wireless smartphone charging.
• EX Premium S: This trim name appears in the lineup, but the available data does not spell out a distinct equipment advantage over the EX.
• SX: This is the performance and feature-rich choice, with the turbocharged engine, standard AWD, upgraded brakes, UVO Intelligence, satellite radio, wireless charging, and the Harman Kardon audio system.

The safety package is strongest on the EX and SX, while the LX Nightsky adds some useful blind-spot coverage lower in the range.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Kia Sportage?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully before committing.

• Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 508 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.13% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,662 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Kia Sportage's resale value?

The current average of $21,662 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,936 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Sportage has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady in the near term. For a future seller, the softer market means you may need to price competitively if you want to move the vehicle quickly. On the other hand, a well-equipped Sportage with the right trim and condition should still appeal to shoppers looking for value in a compact crossover.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Kia Sportage safe?

The 2022 Kia Sportage earns an Acceptable headlight rating from IIHS, which helps it reach Top Safety Pick status.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The EX and SX trims include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is also included on those trims and on the LX Nightsky, while the SX adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability.

One important caveat is that only the SX earns the Acceptable headlight rating mentioned above, so trim choice matters if safety equipment is a priority.

Should I buy a 2022 Kia Sportage or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It offers familiar styling, up-to-date technology, and available turbocharged performance.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $27,215 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $21,662 CAD average.
• It brings a roomier, more modern-feeling redesign with stronger overall appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because prices are softer and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for the newer design and broader appeal, the 2023 is the better long-term choice.
