What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Canyon?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Elevation Standard keeps things simple with a 7-inch colour touchscreen and no advanced driver aids, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The Denali brings the most upscale cabin treatment, and the AT4 adds a more rugged, premium off-road look and feel.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a 200-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, a 308-hp 3.6-litre V6, or a 181-hp 2.8-litre Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder. The V6 and diesel are the stronger choices if you want more capability, while the base engine is described as adequate but uninspiring.
• Safety package: The Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking assistance. It is available on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, but rear park assist is only available on models equipped with leather seats.
• Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch colour touchscreen, while the Elevation upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth streaming audio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Denali adds navigation and a high-definition rearview camera, and the truck also offers WiFi hotspot and OnStar telematics.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-litre four-cylinder returns 10.9 L/100 km combined, or 11.4 L/100 km combined with 4WD. The 2.8-litre turbodiesel achieves 10.1 L/100 km combined in RWD form and 10.5 L/100 km combined with 4WD, while the V6 gets 11.3 L/100 km combined in RWD form and 12.1 L/100 km combined with 4WD.

Which 2022 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Elevation Standard: This is the value-focused starting point if you want the Canyon’s core utility at the lowest entry price. It covers the basics with the 7-inch touchscreen and the standard safety features, but it skips the advanced driver aids and the richer cabin upgrades found higher up.
• Elevation: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the larger 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth streaming audio without jumping all the way to the premium or off-road-focused models. If you want a balanced daily driver, this is the trim to target.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the more rugged character and off-road hardware, including the special suspension, transfer case, locking rear differential, hill-descent control, and all-terrain tyres. It also brings a more premium cabin than the base trim, making it a strong pick if you want capability and style together.
• Denali: This is the luxury choice, with the most upscale exterior and interior treatment, plus navigation, a high-definition rearview camera, and the standard Driver Alert package. It suits you best if you want the most premium Canyon experience.

The Driver Alert package is available on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, but rear park assist requires leather seats.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Canyon?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 23.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 121 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.40% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $37,089 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $37,192 CAD sits slightly below last year's $40,602 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Canyon may be a better buy today than it was a year ago, but it also means future sellers may face more competition if the market stays loose. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to the peak. Stronger trims and well-equipped examples should hold buyer interest better than stripped-down trucks, especially when they are clean and well maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2022 GMC Canyon earns four-star ratings in frontal crash protection and rollover resistance, and five-star ratings in side protection from NHTSA.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon’s standard safety equipment is thin on the base trim, which does not include advanced driver aids. The Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking assistance, and it is available on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali. Keep in mind that rear park assist is only available on models equipped with leather seats.

The safety results also show some important caveats: the truck received a Poor rating in the front passenger-side small overlap test structure and safety cage category, plus Poor headlights and Basic vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention ratings, along with a Marginal LATCH rating.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 23.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.40% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a new Denali Black Edition package and renames the High Elevation package to Elevation Premium.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $34,808 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $37,192 CAD average.
• It brings a refreshed face and a new AT4 trim.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $48,109 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $37,192 CAD average.
• It brings a redesigned next-generation platform with more upscale tech and an AT4X off-road model.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better choice if you want the updated trim mix and a softer used-market price than newer models. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the more affordable path; if you want the newest design and more advanced tech, the 2023 is the step up.
