What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans a value-oriented base model through to a luxurious Platinum, and the higher trims bring more of the desirable equipment that lower trims leave out. The Explorer’s packaging is broad enough that you should compare feature content carefully, especially if you want a more premium feel without stepping all the way to the top.
• Powertrain: You can shop the turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder, an available hybrid based on a 3.3-litre V6, or the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6. The hybrid is the efficiency play, while the V6 brings the strongest acceleration and towing ability.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard, with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.
• Infotainment: You’ll see either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen with Sync 3. Higher trims can add wireless smartphone charging, a surround-view camera system, and a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.3-litre engine uses between 10.3 and 11.8 L/100 km in combined driving, the hybrid can use as little as 9.6 L/100 km, and the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 is rated at 11.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2022 Ford Explorer is offered in 6 trim levels: XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• XLT: This is the entry point to the lineup and a sensible starting place if you want the Explorer’s core space and capability without chasing extras. It uses the turbocharged 2.3-litre engine and gives you the basics of the model’s family-friendly formula.
• ST-Line: This trim adds a sportier look to the XLT formula, making it a better fit if you want style without moving into the higher-performance trims. It keeps the same general powertrain approach while giving the SUV a more aggressive appearance.
• Timberline: Choose this one if you want the most rugged-looking Explorer in the lineup. It pairs the 2.3-litre engine with a more adventure-oriented setup and is the trim to consider if you like the idea of extra trail capability.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the hybrid powertrain, since it combines efficiency with a strong equipment mix. It’s the smart pick for buyers who want a more balanced ownership experience.
• ST: This is the performance choice, with the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 and the most athletic character in the range. If you care most about acceleration and driving enjoyment, this is the one to target.
• Platinum: This is the luxury-focused trim and the closest Canadian equivalent to the test vehicle described in the review. It suits you if you want the most upscale version of the Explorer with the richest available equipment.

Every version earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating, and Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should have room to compare listings and wait for the right one.

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 540 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.18% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,678 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $35,756 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,185 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favourable if you plan to sell soon. A softer market usually means future sellers may need to price more competitively to attract attention, especially if similar listings remain plentiful.

Even so, the Explorer’s broad appeal as a three-row SUV helps support demand. Well-equipped examples with strong condition and desirable features should still hold buyer interest better than less versatile alternatives.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer safe?

The 2022 Explorer earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

It earns four-star ratings in rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests from the last complete set of published results.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. If you choose Co-Pilot360 Assist+, you also get adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.

One caveat is that the review notes some driver-monitoring behaviour can be overly sensitive, with repeated steering-wheel warnings even when the wheel is being held. The lane-centring system can also disengage on sharper bends before re-engaging on straighter pavement.

Should I buy a 2022 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.18% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Ford’s 2022 update adds ST-Line and Timberline trims while keeping the Explorer’s broad family-SUV appeal and strong safety credentials.

The bottom line: If you want a well-rounded three-row SUV with strong safety, broad trim choice, and a softer used-market price than last year, the 2022 Explorer is the year to focus on. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the current market softness to compare carefully and wait for a cleaner example or a better-equipped trim at the right price.
