Yes — the 2022 Ford Explorer earns a 4.92/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, practicality, and spacious interior, and they also call out the useful cargo capacity that makes it appealing for families. The overview also points to a broad trim range and a more modern rear-drive-based foundation, which helps it suit shoppers who want a three-row SUV with both versatility and a bit more polish. Even with some wishes for more power and better warning-system behaviour, the overall package remains compelling for Canadian buyers.

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer reliable?

Owners rate it 4.92/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, with comfort, practicality, and the ability to count on the Explorer for family duty standing out. The expert drive notes also describe the SUV as robust and well sorted in everyday use, which supports the impression that it is built for long-term ownership rather than short-term novelty. Ford’s maintenance perk language is not included in the provided data, but the overall ownership picture still looks reassuring for used buyers.

For used shoppers, the main long-term risk is that some owners report frustration with power and warning-system behaviour, so you should pay close attention to how the driver-assist systems operate on a test drive.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans six models, and the base trim can feel less polished than higher versions. Higher trims add more premium materials and equipment, while the Platinum is the closest Canadian equivalent to the top-spec model described in the test notes.
• Powertrain: You can find a turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder, an available hybrid based on a 3.3-litre V6, and a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 in the ST and Platinum. The hybrid is the efficiency play, while the V6 brings the strongest acceleration and towing ability.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.
• Infotainment: The Explorer uses Sync 3 with either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. Higher trims can add wireless smartphone charging, a surround-view camera system, and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.3-litre engine uses between 10.3 and 11.8 L/100 km in combined driving, the hybrid can use as little as 9.6 L/100 km, and the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 is rated at 11.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2022 Ford Explorer is offered in 6 trim levels: XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• XLT: This is the entry point and the least expensive way into the lineup, but it is also the trim most likely to leave you wanting more equipment. It makes sense if you want the Explorer’s core space and capability without stretching your budget.
• ST-Line: This trim adds a sportier look to the XLT-based package, making it a good fit if you want style upgrades without jumping to the performance-focused ST.
• Timberline: This is the best choice if you want the most rugged-looking Explorer and plan to spend more time on rougher roads or light off-pavement use. It also gets the 2.3-litre turbo engine and extra ground clearance.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it opens the door to the hybrid powertrain, which the expert notes describe as the best blend of power, efficiency, and capability.
• ST: Choose this if you want the strongest acceleration and the sportiest driving character. It also pairs with the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 and can be equipped with the ST Street option package.
• Platinum: This is the luxury pick, with the most upscale equipment and the closest Canadian equivalent to the test vehicle’s top-spec feel.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, and Co-Pilot360 Assist+ is the safety-package upgrade to look for if you want the extra driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 540 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.58% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,682 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $35,758 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,376 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Explorer easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller if prices stay soft. If you own one, the current trend means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and equipment level. Well-equipped versions with the right features should still attract attention, especially if they are priced competitively.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2022 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.58% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Ford’s 2022 update adds ST-Line and Timberline trims while keeping the Explorer’s broad trim spread and modern rear-drive-based platform.

The bottom line: If you want a three-row SUV with a broad trim range, strong safety credentials, and a market that currently favours careful shoppers, the 2022 Explorer is the year to target. If your priority is simply the lowest possible purchase price, a nearby model year may be worth comparing, but the 2022 remains the better-balanced choice for most buyers.
