What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from a value-oriented base model to the Platinum, with ST-Line and Timberline adding more personality. Lower trims can feel more basic in materials and equipment, while higher trims bring a more upscale cabin and more standard features.
• Powertrain: You can choose a turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder, an available hybrid based on a 3.3-litre V6, or a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6. The hybrid is the efficiency play, while the V6 is the choice if you want stronger acceleration and maximum towing capacity.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.
• Infotainment: The Explorer uses Sync 3 with either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. Higher trims can add wireless smartphone charging, a surround-view camera system, and a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.3-litre engine uses between 10.3 and 11.8 L/100 km in combined driving, the hybrid can use as little as 9.6 L/100 km, and the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 is rated at 11.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2022 Ford Explorer is offered in 6 trim levels: XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• XLT: This is the entry point to the lineup and gets the standard 2.3-litre turbo-four, standard 4WD in Canada, and the core family-friendly Explorer formula. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the model and are comfortable with a more basic feel.
• ST-Line: This trim adds a sportier look to the XLT formula without turning the Explorer into a full performance model. It suits you if style matters and you want a more distinctive appearance without moving up to the pricier performance trims.
• Timberline: This is the better pick if you want the most rugged-looking Explorer and plan to spend more time on rougher roads or light off-pavement use. It also gets the same 2.3-litre turbo-four, but with a more adventure-focused character.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it unlocks the available hybrid powertrain, which the expert review calls the best blend of power, efficiency, and capability. If you want a smarter long-term balance of running costs and usefulness, this is the one to target.
• ST: Choose this if you want the strongest acceleration and the sportiest driving experience. It pairs the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 with a more performance-focused personality.
• Platinum: This is the luxury choice, with the twin-turbo V6 and the most upscale equipment. It suits you if you want the most premium Explorer experience and are willing to pay for it.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, while Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so it’s worth shopping carefully and comparing examples.

• Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 543 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.02% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,650 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $35,657 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,470 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, which can make it harder for future sellers to command top dollar unless their vehicle is especially well equipped or exceptionally clean. If you buy at today’s softer pricing, you may have less downside risk than someone who bought when prices were higher.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2022 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Ford added ST-Line and Timberline trim levels while continuing to broaden the Explorer’s appeal across family, comfort, and versatility priorities.

The bottom line: The 2022 Explorer makes sense if you want the updated three-row formula with a broad trim range and a market that currently favours shoppers more than sellers. If you’re price-sensitive, this year’s softer pricing and decent inventory make it a sensible target; if you want to compare nearby years, focus on whichever one gives you the best equipment mix for the money.
