What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from a value-rich base model to a luxurious Platinum, with ST-Line and Timberline adding more choice. Higher trims can bring a mix of quality and questionable materials, while the base trim gives you less of the premium equipment you may want.
• Powertrain: You can shop a turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder, an available hybrid based on a 3.3-litre V6, or a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6. The hybrid is the best blend of power, efficiency, and capability, while the V6 is the choice if you want stronger acceleration and maximum towing capacity.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.
• Infotainment: The Explorer uses Sync 3 with either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, FordPass Connect, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and navigation are available, while higher trims can add wireless smartphone charging, a surround-view camera system, and a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.3-litre engine uses between 10.3 and 11.8 L/100 km in combined driving, the hybrid can use as little as 9.6 L/100 km, and the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 is rated at 11.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2022 Ford Explorer is offered in 6 trim levels: XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• XLT: This is the entry point for the 300-hp turbocharged 2.3-litre engine, standard 4WD, and the core Explorer formula. It makes sense if you want the least expensive path into the lineup and can live without the extra equipment found higher up.
• ST-Line: This trim adds a sportier look on top of the XLT foundation, so it suits you if style matters and you want a more aggressive appearance without jumping to the performance-focused ST.
• Timberline: This is the rugged choice, with improved off-road capability, 22.1 centimetres of ground clearance, and better approach, breakover, and departure angles. It’s the one to consider if you want the most trail-friendly Explorer.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it can be paired with the hybrid powertrain, which the review calls the best blend of power, efficiency, and capability. If you want a more balanced family SUV, this is the trim to focus on.
• ST: Choose this if you want the strongest acceleration and the sportiest driving character, plus the available ST Street package with black 21-inch wheels, performance brakes, and red brake calipers.
• Platinum: This is the luxury pick, and it adds premium equipment such as the 12.3-inch digital instrument display and Active Park Assist 2.0. It’s the trim to buy if you want the most upscale Explorer experience.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, while Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly when the right listing appears.

• Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 523 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.02% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,200 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $35,200 CAD sits slightly below last year's $40,471 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Explorer has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it harder for a future seller to command top dollar unless the vehicle is especially well equipped or exceptionally clean. The current range also shows that values have settled into a more stable band, so depreciation pressure may be less dramatic than it was when prices were higher. Strong demand for family-friendly three-row SUVs should still help support resale interest, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer safe?

The 2022 Explorer earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. If you choose Co-Pilot360 Assist+, you also get adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist. One caveat is that the NHTSA has not published complete crash-test ratings for this model year.

Should I buy a 2022 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Ford added ST-Line and Timberline trim levels for this model year, broadening the lineup’s appeal.

The bottom line: The 2022 Explorer is a smart pick if you want a well-rounded three-row SUV with strong owner satisfaction, a broad trim range, and a softer used-market price than it had a year ago. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to keep shopping nearby model years too, but the 2022 stands out as a balanced choice with plenty of inventory and meaningful deal availability.
