Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Yes — the 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its sporty performance, great handling, stylish design, fuel efficiency, and quick acceleration. That lines up well with the 3 Series’ role as a luxury sports sedan that still feels like a benchmark for buyers who want a restrained look with a genuinely engaging drive.

The market also shows 28.6% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with recurring praise for its sporty performance, great handling, fuel efficiency, and quick acceleration. The expert evaluation also describes the drivetrain and transmission as exceptionally polished, with the car behaving exactly as expected and delivering a confident, composed driving experience.

BMW also includes a maintenance perk in the ownership experience through the brand’s standard service approach on some models, but used buyers should still budget carefully because some owners report oil leak issues and high maintenance costs. That makes a well-documented service history especially important if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition. The base setup is the most stripped-back, while the M340i adds a much richer performance and appearance package with 19-inch wheels, Shadowline trim, blue brake calipers, and a more aggressive exterior treatment. If you want the best balance of equipment and value, the M340i is the one to focus on.
• Powertrain: The 330i xDrive sedan and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the 330e adds plug-in hybrid technology with 32 kilometres of estimated electric range. The M340i steps up to a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, 382 horsepower, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
• Safety package: Active Guard includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Traffic Jam Assistant adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can bring the car to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. Some features are optional, so check carefully before you buy.
• Infotainment: Digital Cockpit Professional brings a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and navigation. Every 3 Series has Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker HiFi sound system, while Connected Package Pro adds BMW Remote Services and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
• Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 9.4 L/100 km on the evaluation route, versus an official combined rating of 9.2 L/100 km.

Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 5 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the entry point if you want the 3 Series experience at the lowest cost, but you should expect a simpler equipment set than the higher trims.
• 330e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid efficiency and the 32-kilometre electric range, especially if your driving includes shorter daily trips.
• M340i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the turbocharged inline-six, stronger performance, and a more distinctive appearance without jumping all the way to full M-car territory.
• M3: Pick this if you want the most serious performance focus in the lineup and are willing to pay for it.
• M3 Competition: This is the top performance choice for buyers who want the most aggressive version of the 3 Series.

Only models equipped with the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight qualify for the Top Safety Pick rating.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 168 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.51% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,208 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $35,208 CAD sits slightly below last year's $42,172 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you may need to be more competitive on condition, mileage, and service history to stand out.

Even so, the 3 Series still has strong brand appeal and a loyal audience of driving enthusiasts. That should help support demand better than many mainstream sedans, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it also earns five-star ratings across the board from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, including for rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Active Guard is the standard safety suite, and it includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Traffic Jam Assistant is available with adaptive cruise control, stop-and-go capability, and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can detect an unresponsive driver and bring the car to a safe stop while placing an SOS call.

One important caveat is that the Top Safety Pick result depends on the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight, so not every used example will qualify.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.51% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• BMW’s 2022 updates are minor and focused on equipment, keeping the core formula intact.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $40,573 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $35,208 CAD average.
• It adds sleeker styling and an updated driver-oriented cockpit.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2022 is the smarter buy because it delivers the core 3 Series experience at a lower average price. If you care more about newer styling and a more modern cabin presentation, the 2023 is the better fit, but you’ll pay more for it.
