overall

Summary
With 16 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,498 CAD, 18.8% of 2021 Volkswagen Jetta listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta stands out by bringing back some of the qualities that long defined the nameplate: an upscale feel and a rewarding driving experience. In this version, Volkswagen pairs a comfortable and functional interior with the latest technology and an athletic, refined ride, giving the car a more polished character than many small-car rivals. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want everyday practicality without giving up a sense of quality behind the wheel.
It is also a strong fit for shoppers looking for efficient, reliable transportation at a manageable price, and owner feedback reinforces that appeal with praise for its gas mileage, comfort, and performance. The Jetta is also seen as affordable and well featured for a base model. A few buyers would like more equipment, such as built-in navigation, but the overall impression is positive, with the car’s value and quality helping it regain ground in the segment.

The backup camera, the digital speedometer, the exceptional gas mileage even at interstate speeds, the quality of the paint and the interior and the stop/start button are the features that made the Jetta a great ride! Yes, I think Jetta is a good value and if I decide to buy a vehicle of its class, I have to rate it as a first choice, even though I have NOT researched any other cars in that class. German quality cannot be overlooked. I have a notion that Americans may have developed an unfair view regarding Volkswagen products partially because of the diesel uproar. I also wonder how much bad-mouthing by US manufacturers has been in play to give VW a bad name. No man-made product is perfect, however German companies like VW do make superior products because they try to make cars with options wanted by value-seeking motorists. Volkswagen is a company that has survived and grown in spite of marketing upsets, especially when one considers the recent history of US manufacturers, who have dropped models simply because they have failed to adapt and often make products that do not cut it.

Generally — the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta earns 4.33/5 from owners and 8/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its gas mileage, comfort, and performance, and many also describe it as affordable and well featured for a base model. That lines up with the Jetta’s use case as efficient, reliable transportation at a manageable price, while still feeling more upscale than many small-car rivals. The market also shows 26.0% of listings as good or great deals, which is a healthy sign for shoppers.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with repeated praise for its gas mileage, comfort, and performance. The expert assessment also supports that impression by describing the Jetta as efficient, comfortable, and enjoyable to drive, with a refined ride and responsive power delivery. If you want a used compact sedan you can count on for commuting and routine driving, the Jetta’s overall ownership profile looks reassuring. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car has been maintained properly and still feels tight and well sorted.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Jetta?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Comfortline is already well equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED head- and taillights, heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and washer nozzles, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Car-Net App-Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. The Highline adds leatherette seating surfaces, a panoramic sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front and rear seats, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Execline adds front fog lights, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster, navigation, and a power driver’s seat with memory.
- Powertrain: Every Jetta uses a 1.4-litre turbo inline four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The 8-speed automatic is standard, while the 6-speed manual is available on the Comfortline and Highline. All grades are front-wheel drive only, and the engine is tuned to feel responsive from a stop and capable at highway speeds.
- Safety package: The Jetta includes front and side airbags, a reversing camera, a tire pressure monitoring system, and automatic post-collision braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the Highline, while the Execline adds automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams.
- Infotainment: The base system uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Car-Net App-Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. The Execline adds Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit with a 10.25-inch display and navigation projection.
- Fuel efficiency: The Jetta uses 6.9 L/100 km combined with the manual transmission and 7.1 L/100 km combined with the automatic.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 3 trim levels: Comfortline, Highline, and Execline.
Here's the short version:
- Comfortline: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point without giving up the essentials. It already brings heated front seats, LED lighting, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth, so it covers the basics very well.
- Highline: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the features many buyers will actually notice every day, including heated rear seats, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Execline: Choose this if you want the most upscale Jetta experience, with ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, a digital instrument cluster, and the most advanced standard driver-assistance equipment.
The safety package is strongest on the Execline, while the Highline is the trim that most clearly balances equipment and value.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Jetta?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 223 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.88% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $19,429 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?
The current average of $19,429 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,049 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Jetta has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help future resale if you buy at the right point in the cycle. For a seller, the softer market means you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if your car is not especially well equipped. The good news is that the Jetta’s combination of comfort, efficiency, and upscale feel should continue to support demand among practical sedan shoppers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta safe?
The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta scores Good in all IIHS crash testing and earns a five-star safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side airbags, a reversing camera, a tire pressure monitoring system, and automatic post-collision braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the Highline, while the Execline adds automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams. One caveat is that the IIHS result falls short of a Top Safety Pick recommendation because the headlights range from Marginal to Poor depending on the grade.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Expert testing highlights an upscale interior, strong ride quality, and responsive everyday performance.
Consider the 2022 if:
