CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Volkswagen Jetta
overall

Summary
With 93 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,341 CAD, 21.5% of 2021 Volkswagen Jetta listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta stands out by bringing back some of the character that helped define the nameplate in the first place. According to the test-drive summary, it offers a comfortable and functional interior, the latest technology, and an athletic, refined ride. That combination makes it feel more polished than many small cars, while still serving the practical role buyers expect from the segment.
Its appeal is rooted in the idea that a small car can be both sensible and enjoyable. The summary notes that Volkswagen had work to do with the seventh-generation Jetta after earlier versions lost some of the upscale feel and rewarding driving experience that once made the model distinctive. For 2021, the Jetta is presented as a car that moves the name back toward refinement and a more premium impression. Owner feedback supports that view, with drivers commonly praising its gas mileage, comfort, and performance, along with its value and equipment level for a base model.
There are still some trade-offs. The user review summary mentions that some drivers wanted built-in navigation, which suggests the car may not satisfy buyers looking for every convenience feature. Even so, the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta’s mix of comfort, efficiency, and a more engaging personality gives it a clearer identity than many of its small-car rivals.

The backup camera, the digital speedometer, the exceptional gas mileage even at interstate speeds, the quality of the paint and the interior and the stop/start button are the features that made the Jetta a great ride! Yes, I think Jetta is a good value and if I decide to buy a vehicle of its class, I have to rate it as a first choice, even though I have NOT researched any other cars in that class. German quality cannot be overlooked. I have a notion that Americans may have developed an unfair view regarding Volkswagen products partially because of the diesel uproar. I also wonder how much bad-mouthing by US manufacturers has been in play to give VW a bad name. No man-made product is perfect, however German companies like VW do make superior products because they try to make cars with options wanted by value-seeking motorists. Volkswagen is a company that has survived and grown in spite of marketing upsets, especially when one considers the recent history of US manufacturers, who have dropped models simply because they have failed to adapt and often make products that do not cut it.

Generally — the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta earns 4.33/5 from owners and 8.00/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Drivers commonly praise its great gas mileage, comfort, and performance, and they also like the value and equipment level for a base model. In practical terms, that lines up well with a compact sedan that aims to be efficient, comfortable, and a little more polished than many rivals.
The Jetta’s appeal is strongest if you want a sensible daily driver with a more refined feel and useful standard equipment. 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which points to a market with some room for selective shopping.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with drivers repeatedly highlighting its gas mileage, comfort, and value. That kind of praise usually matters most when you want a used sedan you can count on for routine commuting and longer-term ownership.
The expert assessment also supports that impression by describing the Jetta as efficient, comfortable, and enjoyable to drive without hidden weaknesses at low or high speeds. It also benefits from a straightforward powertrain and a well-sorted automatic transmission, which should help reduce ownership surprises.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the core package and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained properly and still feels tight and well cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Jetta?
Key things to evaluate:

- Infotainment: The base system uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Car-Net App-Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. Execline adds Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit with a full-colour 10.25-inch display.
- Fuel efficiency: With the manual transmission, the Jetta uses 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined. With the automatic, it uses 7.1 L/100 km combined.

- Inventory: There are 244 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.61% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $19,456 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?
The current average of $19,661 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,996 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it can also mean future sellers may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy well now, you may have less depreciation pressure than someone who paid closer to the earlier average.
The Jetta’s combination of comfort, efficiency, and a more premium feel should help it stay appealing to used shoppers. Strong owner satisfaction also supports demand, which is helpful when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta safe?
The 2021 Jetta scores Good in all IIHS crash testing, but it falls short of a Top Safety Pick recommendation because its headlights range from Marginal to Poor depending on the grade. It earns five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Jetta comes with front and side airbags, a reversing camera, a tire pressure monitoring system, and automatic post-collision braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on Highline, while Execline adds automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams.
The main safety caveat is that headlight performance varies by grade, so you should pay close attention to the trim you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings back a more refined, upscale feel with a comfortable interior and enjoyable driving manners.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,723 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $19,661 CAD average.
- It adds a mild refresh with upgraded technology, more standard features, and a revised powertrain.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter starting point because pricing has eased and owner satisfaction is strong. If you’re willing to spend more for a refreshed package, the 2022 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritise newer features over price.
