Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.4/5 user-rated compact car with an expert score of 7.8/10. The Corolla’s appeal centres on affordability, reliability, and efficiency, while owners also praise its stylish design and strong feature content. It is especially well suited to city driving and to shoppers who want a practical commuter with a bit more personality than the average small car. With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners consistently describe the Corolla as reliable, dependable, and a car they can count on over the long term. The expert review also reinforces that reputation by calling out its bulletproof reliability and its cheap, dependable, thrifty character. Toyota’s generous connected-services trials add some ownership value, and the car’s reputation for easy resale supports the case for long-term use. For used buyers, the main risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing the right trim and condition for your needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE and XSE bring the sportier look and feel, including sport-design bumpers, a mesh grille insert, a subtle body kit, a twin-outlet exhaust, and 18-inch wheels. The base-oriented L, LE, and XLE are the more anonymous choices if you want a simpler commuter.
• Powertrain: The SE and XSE use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with a Dynamic Shift CVT, paddle shifters, and a Sport driving mode. The SE can also be had with a six-speed manual, and the Apex Edition adds a track-tuned sport suspension, a lowered ride height, revised steering calibration, a sport exhaust system, and lightweight 18-inch wheels.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are also standard, while blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available.
• Infotainment: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth are standard. The SE gets an 8-inch touchscreen instead of the standard 7-inch display, and the XSE adds Service Connect, Safety Connect, Remote Connect, SiriusXM, navigation, and Destination Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Corolla XSE should use 7.0 L/100 km combined, with 7.7 L/100 km in the city and 6.1 L/100 km on the highway. The review’s own test route returned 7.6 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the simplest choice if you want the Corolla’s core value proposition and do not need the extra equipment or sportier styling.
• LE: This is the best-value pick for most shoppers because it keeps the Corolla affordable while still giving you the model’s key strengths and a more complete everyday package.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla and are willing to pay more for added comfort and convenience.
• SE: This is the sweet spot if you want the Corolla’s more engaging personality, sportier styling, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• XSE: Pick this if you want the most feature-rich and polished Corolla sedan, including the strongest mix of style, tech, and driving appeal.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the range, and rear side-impact airbags are standard this year as well.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 578 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.50% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $20,775 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $20,775 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,458 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. For a seller, the current trend suggests you should not expect a strong price premium unless your Corolla is especially well equipped or exceptionally clean. The good news is that the model’s reputation for reliability and efficiency should continue to support steady demand.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2021 Corolla earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it a five-star overall rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are also standard, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available. The main caveat is that the adaptive cruise control can brake unevenly at times, and lane-centring assistance may occasionally need driver override.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.50% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 adds standard Android Auto and rear side-impact airbags.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $19,565 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $20,775 CAD average.
• It brings a redesigned look and a more stylish, enjoyable character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,268 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $20,775 CAD average.
• It adds two new colours and keeps the Corolla’s broad range of body styles and powertrains.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the better all-around pick if you want the newer safety and infotainment updates without paying 2022 pricing. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 remains the value play, while the 2022 makes sense only if you want the newer-year premium and broader choice set.

How does the 2021 Toyota Corolla compare to the 2021 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2021 Toyota Corolla 7.8/10 and the 2021 Honda Civic 7.2/10. The Corolla edges ahead on expert score and offers a lower average used price, while the Civic brings a slightly higher starting MSRP and more listings to shop. Both are efficient compact cars, but the Corolla’s stronger deal share and safety emphasis make it the more compelling value for many used buyers.
