Is the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its value, safety features, fuel economy, handling, and comfortable driving experience. That lines up well with the Crosstrek’s use case as a small hatchback with SUV styling cues, standard all-wheel drive, and everyday usability. If you want a compact vehicle that feels easy to live with in Canadian weather, this model year fits that brief well. 21.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for value, fuel economy, and the kind of trouble-free everyday use shoppers tend to want from a small crossover. The expert assessment also notes Subaru’s fairly good reputation for reliability, and the Crosstrek’s cameras and driver aids are positioned to help avoid expensive repair bills after minor incidents. Subaru’s warranty coverage is average for the segment, so your long-term ownership risk is more about choosing a well-kept example than worrying about a fundamentally shaky design.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru Crosstrek?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model is more basic, while Outdoor, Sport, and Limited add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The Outdoor grade stands out with water-repellant upholstery and interior accents, while Limited gets 18-inch alloy wheels and navigation. If you want the best value, the Outdoor trim is the one to focus on because it adds meaningful equipment without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre boxer-four with 152 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque on most trims, while Outdoor and Limited use a 2.5-litre boxer-four with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0-litre can be paired with a six-speed manual, but Sport and Limited are CVT only. The bigger engine is the better pick if you want stronger passing power.
• Safety package: EyeSight is the driver-assistance suite to look for, and CVT-equipped models get adaptive cruise control with lane centring, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Automatic high beams and reverse automatic braking are included on CVT-equipped Sport and Limited grades, while lane-change assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are offered on those trims and the Outdoor grade. The feature set is strongest on higher trims.
• Infotainment: The Crosstrek uses Subaru’s Starlink system with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, and Bluetooth. Outdoor, Sport, and Limited get an 8-inch touchscreen, and navigation is standard on Limited. If you want the easiest-to-live-with setup, the larger screen is worth seeking out.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-litre engine is rated at 8.0 L/100 km combined, while the 2.0-litre with CVT is rated at 7.9 L/100 km combined and the 2.0-litre manual at 9.4 L/100 km combined. The fuel numbers are solid for a small AWD crossover, especially if you choose the CVT.

Which 2021 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 5 trim levels: Convenience, Touring, Sport, Limited, Outdoor.

Here's the short version:

• Convenience: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into Crosstrek ownership and are comfortable with the most basic equipment.
• Touring: This is the sensible step up if you want a little more comfort and convenience without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Outdoor: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 2.5-litre engine, an 8-inch touchscreen, water-repellant upholstery, and useful all-weather features.
• Sport: Choose this if you want more equipment and the stronger engine, plus added driver-assistance features that make daily driving easier.
• Limited: This is the most fully equipped choice, with the 2.5-litre engine, 18-inch wheels, navigation, and the most premium feel in the range.

The safety package is strongest on CVT-equipped trims, and some features are limited to higher grades.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru Crosstrek?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent value.

• Deal availability: 21.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 204 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.14% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $23,127 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?

The current average of $23,132 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,743 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Crosstrek has become more accessible for used buyers, which can be a double-edged sword for future sellers. On one hand, softer pricing can make it easier to attract shoppers who want a compact AWD vehicle with strong practicality. On the other hand, if you buy at today’s lower average, you may have less room for appreciation later unless the market tightens again. The model’s broad appeal should help support demand, especially among buyers who value safety, fuel economy, and all-weather confidence.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek safe?

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek earns five-star ratings in side crash tests and four-star ratings in frontal and rollover crash tests from NHTSA, and it earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick award.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the key driver-assistance suite, and CVT-equipped models get adaptive cruise control with lane centring, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Automatic high beams and reverse automatic braking are included on CVT-equipped Sport and Limited grades, while lane-change assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are offered on those trims and the Outdoor grade. The main caveat is that the IIHS award only applies to models with some available EyeSight features and Steering Responsive Headlights, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used example.

Should I buy a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 21.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.14% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model year adds the more powerful 2.5-litre engine and an upgraded EyeSight system.

The bottom line: The 2021 Crosstrek is a smart pick if you want the updated engine and safety tech without moving to a newer, pricier model year. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2021 is the better all-around choice if you want the strongest mix of value, equipment, and confidence.
