Is the 2021 Nissan Kicks a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Nissan Kicks earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.7/10 expert rating. It is positioned as a refreshed, budget-friendly crossover that keeps its easygoing appeal while adding more features, so you get a small SUV that focuses on style and everyday usability rather than chasing stronger performance. Is the 2021 Nissan Kicks reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2021 Kicks is described as a value-focused subcompact SUV with a strong history of few recalls, and its refreshed formula keeps the emphasis on low running costs and straightforward ownership. Its 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and CVT are tuned for efficiency and everyday use rather than excitement, which generally suits buyers who want simple, predictable transportation.

The model’s standard equipment and budget-friendly packaging also support confidence for used buyers, especially if you want a small crossover that is easy to live with. For long-term ownership, the main risk is not complexity but modest performance, so you should make sure its power delivery matches your expectations.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Nissan Kicks?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S is the most stripped-down version, while the SV and SR add more comfort and convenience equipment. The SR Premium brings the most upscale feel with the Bose Personal Plus sound system, Prima-Tex-appointed seats, surround-view camera, and 17-inch black alloy wheels.
• Powertrain: Every 2021 Kicks uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with 122 horsepower, paired with Nissan’s Xtronic CVT and front-wheel drive. It is tuned for enough power for its size, but it is still not a quick vehicle.
• Safety package: Every trim gets Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking. SV and SR add adaptive cruise control, a driver alertness monitor, and rear door alert.
• Infotainment: The base model gets a 7-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, three USB ports, keyless entry, push-button start, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. SV adds Nissan Intelligent Key, automatic climate control, satellite radio, remote engine start, and a USB-C port. SR Premium adds the Bose Personal Plus sound system and a surround-view monitor.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates it at 7.7 L/100 km in the city, 6.6 L/100 km on the highway, and 7.2 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Nissan Kicks trim should I buy?

The 2021 Nissan Kicks is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SR, and SR Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and are comfortable with the most basic equipment. You still get the core safety suite, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the essentials that make the Kicks easy to live with.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like automatic climate control, satellite radio, remote engine start, Nissan Intelligent Key, and a USB-C port without jumping all the way to the top model.
• SR: Choose this if you want a more polished look and feel, plus the added convenience of rear disc brakes, 17-inch alloy wheels, and the extra equipment that separates it from the base trim.
• SR Premium: This is the trim to buy if you want the most complete Kicks experience, with the Bose Personal Plus sound system, surround-view monitor, Prima-Tex-appointed seating, and the most upscale presentation in the range.

Safety content also notes that SV and SR add adaptive cruise control, a driver alertness monitor, and rear door alert.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Nissan Kicks?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 294 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.17% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $17,329 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Nissan Kicks's resale value?

The current average of $17,336 CAD sits slightly below last year's $19,516 CAD.

That softer pricing trend suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. The Kicks’ value-oriented positioning should help keep it relevant with budget-conscious shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Nissan Kicks safe?

The 2021 Kicks earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every 2021 Kicks comes standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking. It also comes with 10 airbags, cruise control, and two LATCH connections on the rear outboard seats. SV and SR add adaptive cruise control, a driver alertness monitor, and rear door alert.

The main caveat is that the 2021 model has not been crash-tested by IIHS, so you are relying on the standard safety equipment and the NHTSA result rather than a full IIHS evaluation.

Should I buy a 2021 Nissan Kicks or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.17% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings the refreshed look, upgraded interior materials, and more features that help the Kicks feel more premium than earlier versions.

The bottom line: The 2021 model is the right pick if you want the refreshed Kicks with stronger feature content and a softer used-market price. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2021 gives you a good balance of value, equipment, and market availability.
