CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 107 currently listed for sale near Kingston, ON and an average price of $23,328 CAD, 26.2% of 2021 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Mazda CX-5 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 keeps the qualities that made the SUV appealing while adding a few notable updates for the model year. Mazda enhanced the model’s technology and discontinued the unpopular diesel engine, and Canadian buyers also got a new Kuro Edition to choose from. As a result, the CX-5 remains a competitive compact SUV for buyers looking to meet the needs of a typical family.
What stands out most about the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is the way it blends a premium feel with everyday practicality. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for its luxurious feel, sporty performance, comfortable interior, and generous standard equipment. At the same time, some drivers have noted road noise and an infotainment system that feels outdated, so the CX-5’s strengths are balanced by a few familiar drawbacks.

Purchased new, would not purchase again. Has been reliable BUT the webbing inside the rotors are all rusted and I was told to replace the rotors. Not do a brake job. Replace the rotors. At an estimated cost of $1400 while this car is under warranty and has 23,000 miles on it. Also, I have had 4 instances when the fob is inside the car on the center console and the doors lock with no warning. The vehicle does get exceptional highway mileage - 27mpg fully loaded with 4 passengers and luggage up top. The stereo system is nice - not as good as my 2010 Mazda 3 si was, but a stereo does not make a car go or stop. This was my 3rd Mazda and I have decided it is my last Mazda.

| Year-Round High | $27,917 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,910 CAD |

Prices have softened 7.32% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 472 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 4.79/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.5/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise the CX-5’s luxurious feel, sporty performance, comfortable interior, and generous standard equipment. That lines up well with its use case as a compact SUV for a typical family, especially if you want a more premium-feeling cabin without moving into a luxury badge. Even with some complaints about road noise and an infotainment system that feels outdated, the overall package remains appealing. With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still a decent amount of market value to be found.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that feels dependable, trouble-free, and easy to count on over time. The expert assessment reinforces that impression by describing the CX-5 as a competitive compact SUV with a strong family focus and a well-rounded ownership experience. Mazda also includes a three-year/unlimited kilometre new vehicle warranty and a five-year/unlimited kilometre powertrain warranty, which adds some reassurance for used buyers. For a used purchase, the main long-term ownership risk is less about core durability and more about whether you can live with the infotainment and road-noise drawbacks.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base GX is the most stripped-back version, while the GS adds leatherette seats, a power liftgate, and auto-leveling LED headlights. If you want more comfort and convenience, the GS with the Comfort Package adds dual-zone automatic climate control, rear passenger air vents, keyless entry, and a power moonroof. The Kuro Edition layers on blacked-out styling and red leather seats, while the GT and Signature move further into premium territory with leather-trimmed upholstery, Bose audio, digital instrumentation, and richer interior materials.
- Powertrain: The GX, GS, and Kuro Edition use a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. The GT can be had with that engine or a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. The Signature uses the turbo engine and standard AWD.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. Available upgrades include a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.
- Infotainment: Every CX-5 gets a 10.25-inch infotainment touch screen, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is standard across the range, but the interface is described as dated and awkward to use through the centre-console controller.
- Fuel efficiency: The non-turbo FWD model uses 9.7 L/100 km in the city, 7.8 on the highway, and 8.8 combined. With AWD, that rises to 10.2 city, 8.2 highway, and 9.3 combined. The turbocharged AWD version uses 10.8 city, 8.7 highway, and 9.8 combined.
Which 2021 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: GX, GS, Kuro Edition, GT, Signature.
Here's the short version:
- GX: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the CX-5 lineup and are comfortable giving up the extra comfort and premium touches found higher up.
- GS: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a meaningful step up in comfort and convenience, including leatherette seats, a power liftgate, and more useful lighting.
- Kuro Edition: Choose this if you want the GS equipment with a more distinctive appearance and a richer cabin presentation, including red leather seats and black exterior accents.
- GT: This is the right pick if you want a more upscale feel, stronger audio, and access to the turbo engine for a more energetic drive.
- Signature: This is the most premium version, with Nappa leather, genuine wood trim, and standard turbo power, so it suits you best if cabin quality matters most.
The safety package is strong across the lineup, but the available adaptive lighting system is worth considering if you drive often at night.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 472 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.32% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $25,868 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $25,868 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,910 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly, which can make it easier to purchase but may limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For future sellers, the current trend implies you should expect pricing pressure unless market conditions tighten. Even so, the CX-5’s strong owner satisfaction and premium reputation should help support demand when it’s time to list.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. You can also add a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition. The main caveat is that the best headlights are not standard, so you should look for the adaptive lighting system if night driving matters to you.
Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda added a new Kuro Edition and improved the model’s technology.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $23,341 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,868 CAD average.
- It offers a more premium feel than many mainstream compact SUVs.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $28,711 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,868 CAD average.
- It pushes the CX-5 further into premium territory with stronger substance and engineering.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and market availability, the 2021 is the sensible default. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the 2020 is the cheaper path into the same premium-feeling formula. If you want a newer-feeling CX-5 and are willing to pay more, the 2022 is the better step up.
