The expert assessment also notes that both engines deliver ample power for everyday driving, and the Kona’s overall character is confident and composed.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Kona’s trim walk starts with a well-equipped entry model, but higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The base setup already includes a simple, intuitive cabin layout, while upper trims can bring leather on the steering wheel and seats, plus more available equipment. If you want the best value, the mid-range trims are the ones to compare most closely.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 horsepower, or an optional turbocharged 1.6-litre engine with 195 hp. The base engine is paired with a six-speed automatic, while the turbo uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Kona is described as agile and fun to drive, but the dual-clutch transmission can feel less graceful at low speeds.
• Safety package: Every Kona comes with forward-collision avoidance assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on AWD grades, while lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and parking sensors are available.
• Infotainment: Every Kona includes an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, six speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and USB inputs. Available upgrades include SiriusXM radio, navigation, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen, though that larger screen is not compatible with wireless smartphone connectivity.
• Fuel efficiency: With FWD and the base engine, the Kona returns 8.6/7.0/7.9 L/100 km city/highway/combined. With AWD and the base engine, it uses 9.2/7.8/8.6 L/100 km. The turbo engine with AWD is rated at 9.0/8.0/8.6 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona is offered in 6 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Trend, Luxury, Urban Edition, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the starting point if you want the Kona’s core value proposition and standard tech without paying for extras. It suits you if you care most about keeping the purchase simple and affordable.
• Preferred: This trim is the one to watch if you want a better balance of equipment and price. It builds on the entry model’s basics while staying close to the Kona’s value-first appeal, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers.
• Trend: This is a smart step up if you want more comfort and convenience without jumping too far in price. The cost-effectiveness commentary suggests there is not a huge penalty for moving up, so this trim is worth a close look.
• Luxury: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel, including the kind of added comfort features that make the Kona feel less basic. It is a good fit if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while and want a richer daily experience.
• Urban Edition: This trim is for you if style and a more distinctive presentation matter. It fits the Kona’s playful personality and gives the model a more expressive character.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version and makes sense if you want the most features the Kona offers. It is the trim to consider if you want to maximize convenience and technology.

Every Kona includes forward-collision avoidance assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and cruise control, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on AWD grades.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

• Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 392 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.15% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $19,063 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $19,171 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,577 CAD.

That price decline suggests the Kona has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. The current market still shows enough demand to support resale, especially because the Kona’s value, styling, and standard features remain part of its appeal. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.15% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong styling, great features, and decent specs in a value-forward package.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $17,453 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $19,171 CAD average.
• It is one of the smallest cars you can buy with all-wheel drive.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $20,997 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $19,171 CAD average.
• It gets a first significant refresh with updated styling and improved powertrains.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want the strongest mix of value, features, and buyer satisfaction. If your priority is spending less, the 2020 is the better budget path, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the refreshed look and added performance.

How does the 2021 Hyundai Kona compare to the 2021 Mazda CX-30?
