Is the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?

Yes — the 4.9/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 5.67/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly praise the luxurious cabin, strong engine performance, advanced technology, and comfortable interior. The Sierra’s premium-leaning character also fits buyers who value a refined cabin and useful tech in a truck that still does real truck work.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is that some desirable features and packages can add complexity and cost.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Sierra 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sierra’s trims range from more practical versions to the upscale Denali and the off-road-focused AT4. Base versions can miss features that higher trims add, and some safety equipment is optional rather than standard.
• Powertrain: The Duramax 3.0-litre turbodiesel six-cylinder is the standout engine choice, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and easy-to-use 4WD system. It delivers strong torque and impressive fuel economy for a full-size pickup.
• Safety package: Forward collision warning, front pedestrian braking, and automatic emergency braking are available, while blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning come on Denali and are optional on other trims. Lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and a Safety Alert Seat are also available depending on trim.
• Infotainment: You can get a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. The available Technology Package adds a 15-inch head-up display and an 8-inch driver information display.
• Fuel efficiency: The Duramax diesel averaged 11.1 L/100 km in testing, with an official combined rating of 9.1 L/100 km.

Which 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 2 trim levels: Elevation and AT4.

Here's the short version:

• Elevation: This is the best-value trim to consider if you want a custom appearance and enough option flexibility to keep the price in check. It can be a smart middle ground for buyers who want style without pushing too far into premium pricing.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the off-road-ready version with a factory suspension lift, skid plates, a locking rear differential, and other rugged hardware. It suits you best if you want capability and a more adventurous character.

Safety-package note: blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are standard on Denali and optional on other trims, while adaptive cruise control is available on SLT, AT4, and Denali.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Sierra 1500?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 618 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.46% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $39,666 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $39,683 CAD sits slightly below last year's $45,854 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can make the truck easier to buy now but may also mean future sellers face more competition. If you own one, the softer pricing trend could limit upside in the near term unless your truck is especially well equipped or lightly used.

Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when you eventually sell. Trucks with the Sierra’s kind of loyal following often hold buyer interest better than models with weaker reviews.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star protection levels for the driver and front passenger in the frontal-impact test.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

The Sierra’s safety equipment includes forward collision warning, front pedestrian braking, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and a Safety Alert Seat, depending on trim. Adaptive cruise control is available on SLT, AT4, and Denali.

There are also some clear caveats. IIHS rates the front passenger protection in the small-overlap frontal test as Marginal, gives the headlights a Poor rating, and rates LATCH anchor accessibility as Marginal.

Should I buy a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It offers a premium-feeling cabin, strong engine performance, and useful tech without the 2022 redesign.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $47,170 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $39,683 CAD average.
• It brings a major redesign with a bolder look and a more lavish interior.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and owner satisfaction is strong. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer design and upgraded cabin, the 2022 is the better long-term choice.
