CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Tundra
overall

Summary
With 19 currently listed for sale and an average price of $50,278 CAD, 15.8% of 2020 Toyota Tundra listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Tundra 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5.33 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Tundra stands out most for its reputation for reliability. The test-drive data describes it as a truck that should prove “utterly bulletproof” in that regard, and it also suggests that reliability is one of its main virtues. For buyers who value long-term dependability above all else, that is a major part of its appeal.
It also offers a spacious cabin and an impressive stereo, which help make it more comfortable and pleasant to live with than its age might suggest. At the same time, the 2020 Toyota Tundra is clearly not a modern benchmark in every respect. The test-drive data calls out poor fuel economy, noise, and poor safety ratings, and it says the truck is uncompetitive in numerous ways. In other words, this is a full-size pickup that may win over shoppers with durability and space, but it asks them to accept some significant compromises.

I purchased this truck new and overall the value is good but I have had some challenges. My a/c has a gremlin in it sometimes it works sometimes works but not at the level it was designed for. This truck rides like a truck so if you are looking for a nice this isn't the truck for you. I have the crew cab and the space inside is fantastic. I also like having the V8 engine. Overall it is a good buy but the interior is definitely dated. I need a key to start where others only need press a button. :-)

How much does the 2020 Toyota Tundra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $45,117 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $43,461 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $50,911 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $50,974 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.49% |
Prices have softened 11.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 62 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for you to compare.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tundra a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Tundra earns a 4.79/5 user rating and a 5.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Drivers consistently praise its reliability, power, and spacious interior, and many describe it as sturdy, dependable, and well suited to long-term ownership. The cabin comfort and impressive stereo also come through as recurring positives, even if the interior design feels dated to some shoppers.
The trade-offs are clear: the expert review calls out poor fuel economy and noise, and it also says the truck is uncompetitive in numerous ways. For you, that means the Tundra makes the most sense if you value durability, space, and a proven full-size pickup formula more than modern refinement.
Only 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you may need to shop carefully to find the best value.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tundra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user-review summary repeatedly points to reliability, dependability, and long-term ownership appeal, with many drivers describing it as a truck you can count on. The expert test-drive notes also frame it as a “bulletproof” workhorse in terms of reliability, which reinforces the same theme from a different angle.
The powertrain is described as a refined and durable workhorse, and the review also says the transmission is flawless. Toyota’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which is a small ownership perk.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that durability does not erase age-related compromises, so you should still budget for wear, maintenance, and the truck’s less efficient operating costs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Tundra?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR, SR5, and Platinum are the main trim levels, and the higher you climb, the fancier and plusher the Tundra gets. The SR5 can be paired with SX, TRD Off-road, TRD Off-road Premium, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Pro, and Chrome Appearance packages, while the Platinum can add a 1794 Edition package. Base-trim feature gaps matter because the lower trims use the smaller 7-inch display, while more expensive versions get an 8-inch screen.
- Powertrain: Every 2020 Tundra uses a 5.7-litre V8 with a six-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain is described as refined and durable, with 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, but fuel efficiency is unimpressive.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense comes standard and includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, and Safety Connect services are included on most Tundras.
- Infotainment: Lower trims get a 7-inch display, while pricier versions upgrade to an 8-inch screen. All versions include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB media and charging ports, and the top system adds dynamic navigation, dynamic voice recognition, dynamic point-of-interest search, SiriusXM satellite radio, and connected safety services.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says a Tundra 4WD uses 18.0 L/100 km in the city, 14.2 on the highway, and 16.3 combined. The review also notes an average of 16.4 L/100 km during mixed driving.
Which 2020 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Tundra is offered in 3 trim levels: SR, SR5, and Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the Tundra’s core V8 durability and full-size capability without paying for extra luxury or appearance upgrades.
- SR5: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it opens the door to the widest range of packages, including TRD Off-road, TRD Sport, and TRD Pro options.
- Platinum: Choose this if you want the plusher, more upscale side of the Tundra, along with the available 1794 Edition package.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Tundra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 62 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.49% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $43,461 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Tundra's resale value?
The current average of $45,117 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,974 CAD.
That softer pricing can work in your favour if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. The current range still suggests the Tundra holds meaningful value, especially for shoppers who prioritise proven durability over newer features.
Because the truck has already moved down from its year-ago average, resale upside may be more limited in the near term unless demand strengthens. Even so, the Tundra’s reputation for long-term ownership helps support buyer interest.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tundra safe?
The 2020 Toyota Tundra gets Good ratings in the IIHS tests that were most revealing under older standards, but it also earns a Marginal driver rating, a Poor front-passenger rating, and Marginal headlights in small-overlap frontal testing.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard and includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, and most Tundras include a free year of Safety Connect with automatic collision notification and SOS emergency calling.
The main caveat is the crash-test performance: the IIHS results are weak in the small-overlap test, and the expert review also calls out poor safety ratings. If safety is a top priority for you, that is the biggest reason to shop carefully.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its bulletproof reliability and spacious cabin.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $46,822 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $45,117 CAD average.
- It feels more current while keeping the Tundra’s proven, straightforward formula.
The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced, reliability-first version of the Tundra formula, the 2020 is the better buy. If you are willing to spend more for a slightly newer take, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2020’s stronger value.
