Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Impreza stands out as a compact car that blends everyday practicality with the confidence of standard all-wheel drive. It sits in the fifth generation, which brought a more rigid platform, better handling and ride quality, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the range. For buyers who want a small car that feels secure in poor weather and still remains easy to live with, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
For 2020, Subaru gave the Impreza a mid-cycle refresh with a revised front bumper, an updated grille, new wheel designs, updated climate controls, and infotainment upgrades. EyeSight became standard on all CVT-equipped models at that time. The model also kept its 2.0-litre boxer engine with 152 horsepower, while the available body styles and transmission choices reflected the generation’s move away from the sportier, manual-transmission focus of earlier years.
There are trade-offs, though. The Impreza’s strengths are comfort, handling, and standard AWD, but it is not the most exciting-looking or most spacious choice in the segment, and some interior materials feel cheap. Even so, for shoppers who value all-weather traction, a comfortable drive, and useful technology in a mainstream compact car, the 2020 Subaru Impreza makes a strong case for itself.

Transitioning from a 2012 Honda CR-Z to the 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-door hatchback is as seamless as could be - exactly what I wanted. The CVT is so smooth, the backseat is now legal, and the AWD is an upgrade. Great mileage, the shmancy multi-function display, Android Auto, and seat warmers really make this car the ideal successor. I also looked into the Mazda3 and am glad I went the Impreza route - Im sure it also wouldve been a great choice but well never know.

Love everything about car in relation to interior features. This was a one owner car purchased as my commuter car. The only slightly negative thing is I would have preferred a different color, though the dark blue is very pretty, I just think it easily shows dust and road film so more attention to exterior maintenance in my future.

Great little car! Quite responsive given the CVT and engine size. Time will tell if its reliable.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,196 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $18,142 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $22,407 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,276 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −18.31% |
Prices have softened 18.31% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 93 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2020 Subaru Impreza a good car?
Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its ride quality, handling, fuel efficiency, and standard all-wheel drive, which fits well if you want a compact car that feels secure in poor weather and remains easy to live with. The 2020 refresh also adds useful everyday updates such as revised styling, updated controls, and broader tech coverage, making it a practical pick for mainstream compact-car shoppers. With 25.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to find value if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Subaru Impreza reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the car’s all-wheel-drive confidence and everyday usability. That kind of long-term praise matters if you want a used car you can count on for regular commuting and year-round driving.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright reliability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and still feels fresh inside.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Impreza?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be patient and still find a decent example.
- Deal availability: 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 93 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.31% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $18,142 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $18,196 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,276 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. A clean, well-kept example should still attract interest because the model’s practical layout and standard all-wheel drive remain appealing to used shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the better pick if you want the refreshed version of this generation with strong owner satisfaction, standard all-wheel drive, and a market that has become more buyer-friendly. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2020 makes the most sense when you want a balanced mix of value, confidence, and everyday usability.
