What should I look for when buying a used 2020 RAM 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tradesman is the work-focused starting point with steel wheels, vinyl upholstery and flooring, a bench seat, a 5-inch touchscreen, and a rear-view camera. The Big Horn adds more comfort and convenience, while the Rebel brings a lifted, off-road suspension, off-road tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and a more aggressive profile. The Laramie shifts toward luxury with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and more tech, while the Longhorn adds even more upscale touches and the Limited brings premium leather, power-retractable side steps, and additional safety upgrades.
• Powertrain: You can get a 3.6-litre V6 with eTorque, a 5.7-litre Hemi V8, or the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6. The V6 is the efficiency-minded choice, the V8 is the stronger all-rounder, and the EcoDiesel stands out for torque and towing-focused buyers.
• Safety package: The available driver-assistance equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and a self-parking system with a 360-degree camera. Some of these features are not standard, and several are limited to higher trims.
• Infotainment: Lower trims use a 5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims can get an 8.4-inch unit or the 12-inch tablet-style touchscreen. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available on the 8.4-inch setup, and the system also supports over-the-air-style convenience through its connected tech features.
• Fuel efficiency: The 3.6-litre V6 with 4WD is rated at 12.2 L/100 km city, 9.7 highway, and 11.1 combined. The 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 with 4WD is rated at 11.1 L/100 km city, 8.0 highway, and 9.7 combined.

Which 2020 RAM 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2020 RAM 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Tradesman, Big Horn, Rebel, Laramie, Longhorn, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• Tradesman: This is the best-value starting point if you want a capable truck without paying for extras you may not need. It gives you the basics, including a rear-view camera, push-button ignition, and a 5-inch touchscreen, while keeping the price focus on utility.
• Big Horn: This is the trim to consider if you want the best balance of comfort and value. It adds a more polished feel, and it can be equipped with desirable upgrades like the 8.4-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control, and air suspension.
• Rebel: Choose this if you want the most aggressive, off-road-oriented setup in the lineup. It adds a lifted suspension, off-road tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and a more rugged character, plus the diesel engine is available here.
• Laramie: This is the right pick if you want a clear step up in luxury. It adds leather, heated and ventilated front seats, driver memory, parking sensors, and a better stereo, making it a strong choice for comfort-focused buyers.
• Longhorn: Pick this if you want a more upscale, western-themed luxury truck with extra exterior flair, upgraded leather, rear-seat comfort features, and navigation. It suits buyers who want premium feel and more rear-seat amenities.
• Limited: This is the top choice if you want the most premium equipment and the strongest safety and convenience content. It adds standard air suspension, premium leather, power-retractable side steps, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Advanced safety features are not standard, so check carefully for the exact package and trim combination you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 RAM 1500?

The market looks moderately favourable if you’re a selective buyer.

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,686 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.94% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $31,344 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 RAM 1500's resale value?

The current average of $31,363 CAD sits slightly below last year's $36,026 CAD.

That price movement suggests the truck has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the current average or below, you may have less downside than someone who bought when prices were higher.

The year-round range also shows that values have room to move depending on trim, equipment, and condition. Well-equipped trucks with desirable features should remain easier to position later, especially if they appeal to the same comfort- and capability-minded buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 RAM 1500 safe?

The 2020 RAM 1500 earns a Top Safety Pick Plus from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The available driver-assistance suite includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and a self-parking system with a 360-degree camera. Some of those features are limited to higher trims, and the expert review notes that advanced safety features are not standard.

The IIHS result applies only if you choose the Crew Cab with all active safety equipment and the optional LED lights, so equipment selection matters here.

Should I buy a 2020 RAM 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.94% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The EcoDiesel returns for every trim, adding rare diesel choice across the lineup.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $33,121 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $31,363 CAD average.
• It adds the TRX, a high-performance off-road trim with supercharged attitude.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and broader diesel availability, the 2020 is the smarter buy. If you want the most extreme performance version and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is the one to consider.
