Used 2020 Ford Explorer for Sale nearMedicine Hat, AB

How much does the 2020 Ford Explorer cost?

Prices have softened 17.80% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 384 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Ford Explorer a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Ford Explorer earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the power, stylish design, advanced safety features, spacious interior, and modern technology. That lines up well with the Explorer’s use case as a roomy family SUV that also feels more engaging than a typical three-row hauler.

The trade-offs are clear, though: the interior materials feel cheap, and the value proposition is weak because the price climbs quickly. Even so, if you want a larger SUV with a more modern feel and a broader performance range, this model year fits that brief well.

With 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Ford Explorer reliable?

Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and trouble-free for many shoppers, with praise for the way it delivers strong performance while still meeting family needs. The expert assessment also highlights the Explorer’s solid chassis and smooth, uninterrupted power delivery, which supports confidence in day-to-day use.

Ford also includes a useful maintenance perk in the ownership experience, which helps soften early running costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a premium-priced SUV with a mixed reputation for interior quality can become expensive to live with if previous owners skipped maintenance or if wear has already started to show.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Explorer?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin quality is a major weak point, especially at higher prices, so pay close attention to whether the trim you’re considering actually adds enough equipment to justify the cost. The base setup is already well equipped, but the interior materials remain a concern even as you move up.
• Powertrain: You can find a 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder, a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, and a hybrid setup in the broader model line. The V6 brings the strongest performance, while the four-cylinder is the volume engine and the hybrid is positioned differently from the gas-only versions.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot 360 comes standard with forward automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, auto high beams, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with steering assist, reverse braking, and a passenger front knee airbag.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, factory navigation, keyless entry, remote start, 3-zone climate control, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Ford’s keyless entry keypad. Higher-spec models can add a 10-inch vertical touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder is rated at 11.6 L/100 km city, 8.7 L/100 km highway, and 10.3 L/100 km combined. The V6 is rated at 13.3 L/100 km city, 9.8 L/100 km highway, and 11.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2020 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2020 Ford Explorer is offered in 1 trim level: XLT.

Here's the short version:

The XLT is the trim to focus on if you want the core Explorer experience without chasing expensive extras. It already gives you standard AWD, the standard safety suite, and the main infotainment and convenience features, so it covers the essentials well. If you’re shopping used, this is the trim that makes the most sense for value because the model’s biggest drawback is how quickly the price climbs relative to the interior quality.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you don’t need to move up just to get the key driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Explorer?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 384 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.80% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $26,895 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $26,914 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,743 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the good news is that the Explorer still has broad appeal thanks to its space, styling, and strong feature content. The challenge is that its premium pricing and mixed value perception can keep resale gains in check unless the vehicle is well equipped and well maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Ford Explorer safe?

The 2020 Ford Explorer earns a five-star safety rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot 360 comes standard with forward automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, auto high beams, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with steering assist, reverse braking, and a passenger front knee airbag. That gives you a strong standard safety package without needing to climb the trim ladder.

One caveat is that reverse braking can activate falsely, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re test-driving or parking in tight spaces.

Should I buy a 2020 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.80% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model year brings an all-new chassis, upgraded technology, and available hybrid and high-performance powertrains.

The bottom line: If you want the most modern-feeling Explorer in this price band, the 2020 is the one to target because it combines the new chassis, stronger tech, and broad powertrain choice. If you’re more price-sensitive, shop carefully and compare against nearby years, since the Explorer’s value story is still mixed and the best deal may come down to condition, equipment, and how aggressively the seller has priced it.
