Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Dodge Challenger earns 4.8/5 from owners and 8/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

The Challenger’s appeal is especially strong if you want a coupe that feels distinctive rather than conventional, with old-school character paired with modern usability.

The expert assessment also points to a car that blends modern automotive technology with a proven muscle-car formula, which supports confidence in how it should hold up over time.

The Challenger’s straightforward layout and easy-to-use systems also suggest it should be relatively simple to live with compared with more complicated performance cars. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core character and more about finding an example that has been cared for properly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Dodge Challenger?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SXT starts with 18-inch aluminium wheels, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, remote keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, and a 7-inch touchscreen, while the GT adds 20-inch wheels, a hood scoop, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and unique houndstooth cloth seats. The R/T adds a V8 and performance upgrades, and the Scat Pack 392 brings heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen. If you want the best value, the Scat Pack 392 stands out for its stronger equipment mix.
• Powertrain: The base V6 makes 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque, with rear-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The R/T uses a 5.7-litre Hemi V8, the Scat Pack 392 upgrades to a 6.4-litre Hemi V8, and the Hellcat and Redeye variants move into supercharged V8 territory for much higher output.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, supplemental side curtain airbags, traction control, brake assist, and a child-seat anchoring system. The optional technology group adds forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path alert, and ParkSense reverse sensing are also optional. Advanced safety features are not standard on every trim.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The available Uconnect 8.4 adds a larger screen and Garmin-based navigation with real-time traffic updates.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 3.6L V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 12.4 L/100 km in city driving, 7.8 on the highway, and 10.3 combined. The V6 with all-wheel drive returns 12.8 city, 8.7 highway, and 11.0 combined. The 5.7-litre V8 with the eight-speed automatic returns 14.7 city, 9.4 highway, and 12.3 combined.

Which 2020 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2020 Dodge Challenger is offered in 9 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, Scat Pack 392, Scat Pack 392 Widebody, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, SRT Hellcat Redeye, and SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Challenger’s core look and standard tech without pushing the price into the higher-performance trims. It suits you if you want the style and everyday usability first.
• GT: The GT adds more visual presence and convenience features, including the hood scoop, remote start, and paddle shifters. It is a good fit if you want a more dressed-up Challenger without jumping to V8 power.
• R/T: The R/T is the first V8 trim and adds the performance character many shoppers want from a Challenger. It is the right choice if you want stronger straight-line performance and a more traditional muscle-car feel.
• Scat Pack 392: This is the best-value performance trim because it adds the 6.4-litre V8, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the larger touchscreen. If you want the strongest mix of equipment and performance, this is the one to target.
• Scat Pack 392 Widebody: Choose this if you want the Scat Pack formula with a wider stance, wider tyres, and a more aggressive look and handling character.
• SRT Hellcat: This trim is for buyers who want extreme power and the added hardware that comes with it, including the dual-intake hood scoop setup and the high-output supercharged V8.
• SRT Hellcat Widebody: This adds the wider body and broader track to the Hellcat’s already serious performance focus.
• SRT Hellcat Redeye: This is the most powerful standard-body version and is aimed at buyers who want maximum straight-line performance.
• SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody: This is the top-end choice if you want the Redeye’s output with the wider body and the most aggressive stance.

The safety package is optional rather than standard, so make sure the example you’re considering has the driver-assistance features you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Dodge Challenger?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on well-priced examples.

• Deal availability: 14.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 69 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.39% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,100 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $38,477 CAD sits slightly below last year's $48,330 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later, especially if you choose a desirable trim and keep the car in strong condition.

The Challenger’s broad appeal, strong performance reputation, and distinctive character should help support demand among used shoppers. Still, the resale picture will depend heavily on trim, condition, and how well the car has been maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Dodge Challenger safe?

The Challenger earns a “Marginal” overall score from IIHS crash testing and four-star ratings in front driver’s side crash testing and rollover testing from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for front passenger side testing and no side-impact evaluation reported.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include front- and side-impact airbags, supplemental side curtain airbags, traction control, brake assist, and a child-seat anchoring system. The optional technology group adds forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path alert, and ParkSense reverse sensing are also optional.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should check carefully for the equipment you want on any used example.

Should I buy a 2020 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 14.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.39% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model year adds several new colours, additional interior design choices, and a 50th Anniversary package for some trims.

The bottom line: If you want a Challenger with strong owner satisfaction, softened pricing, and the same core muscle-car formula, the 2020 model year is a sensible place to shop. If you are especially price-sensitive, focus on the lower end of the market and look for a well-equipped example that has the safety features and trim content you want.
