Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW X3 stands out as a compact luxury SUV that blends practicality with the driving dynamics BMW is known for. It has a sporty feel and drives more like a regular car than an SUV, while still offering the high seating position and easy access buyers expect from the segment. It is also aimed at drivers who want premium features without moving to a larger vehicle, and its appeal is strengthened by the brand’s focus on engaging handling and strong powertrains.
For 2020, the X3’s third-generation formula included modern technology such as LED headlights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus the latest connectivity options. It also brought adaptive suspension and automatic climate control, along with BMW’s iDrive touchscreen infotainment system. The xDrive30e plug-in hybrid arrived in Canada for the 2020 model year, with a combined 288 horsepower and 29 kilometres of all-electric range. Other versions in this generation were also well regarded for sharp handling, stability, premium materials inside, and a family-friendly rear seat area with lots of legroom.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The X3 is not designed for off-road use, and premium ownership usually means higher maintenance and repair costs than similar non-luxury alternatives. Some rivals also offer more rear passenger space, and owners have noted that cargo room is a little tighter than in larger models. Even so, the 2020 BMW X3 remains appealing because it combines luxury, technology, and driving enjoyment in a package that is still practical for everyday use.

Extraordinary ride, very personable for me, as a middle aged woman, no kids, not too much to handle and all the bells and whistles. Sexy, sleek, great on gas and I am up high enough, coming from a 3281 conv. I am pleased!

I really like this car so far. I had a 2017 X5 PHEV and decided I wanted something a little smaller. I think the size is perfect. The lease cost, after the state and federal tax credits, feels like good value to me.

| Current Average Price | $25,718 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $25,718 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $31,196 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $30,926 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −16.84% |
Prices have softened 16.84% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 172 listings available, which suggests a modest but workable amount of inventory for shoppers.
Is the 2020 BMW X3 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 BMW X3 earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its blend of style, performance, and functionality, along with its comfortable ride and high-tech features. It also fits well if you want a compact luxury SUV that feels sporty and car-like while still giving you the higher seating position and everyday practicality of the segment. With 36.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is also a decent amount of market value to compare as you shop.
Is the 2020 BMW X3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centred on its comfort, power, and technology. That kind of repeat positive feedback matters for used buyers because it suggests the ownership experience has been trouble-free enough to build confidence over time. For a premium SUV, that can help reduce the sense of long-term ownership risk, though you should still expect luxury-brand maintenance costs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW X3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 172 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.84% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $25,718 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW X3's resale value?
The current average of $25,718 CAD sits slightly below last year's $30,926 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the X3 more attractive to you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means there may be less room for appreciation unless demand strengthens. Still, the model’s premium badge, practical layout, and strong owner feedback can help support interest when it is time to resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW X3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2020 BMW X3 is the better fit if you want a compact luxury SUV with strong owner approval, a softer used-market price, and enough inventory to compare options. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also keep nearby model years in play, but the 2020 stands out as the most balanced choice for value, satisfaction, and shopping flexibility.
